The Chiefs Home Improvement Plan: A Work In Progress ...

The Kansas City Chiefs GM Scott Pioli has done it. With some deft drafting, shrewd maneuvers and timely signings, Pioli has finally done it: he?s made the Kansas City Chiefs into? a work in progress.

It?s official: ladies and gentlemen, the KC Chiefs are a brick house. Of course the Chiefs are a few bricks short of an out-house? but, at least that?s a house too, right?

So, how did we get here? Wasn?t this was supposed to be a team that competes for a Conference title and bangs with the big boys of the AFC?

The deft drafting? Daft.
The shrewd maneuvers and timely signings? Closer to inept and silly.

Typifying the Chiefs? drafting in this manner, based upon two hellacious (emphasis on the ?hell?) preseason games, is probably not fair or factual, but this is not about accuracy or democracy; it?s about feelings. That?s why we watch the sport isn?t it? We all want to feel good?at least some of the time?and this doesn?t. Maybe it?s simply that the first Chiefs preseason game was so gloriously fun to watch that the juxtaposition is a big pile a pooh.

So, what happens next is anybody?s guess. At least Head Coach Romeo Crennel, appropriately, is not happy, and that makes me happy? at least a little.

As you would expect: the Chiefs will be making moves.

Chiefs fans around the globe are doing their own surveillance in hopes of seeing the team improve. In response to my recent article called, ?Will The Chiefs Really Be Better In 2012,? Addict poster ?iowaskcchiefsfan? had this to say about possible upcoming moves by the Chiefs:

The Chiefs could sign FA?s Marcus Thomas, DT/NT, 6?3?, 320 lbs., 6th season. Played NT in the Denver 3-4 for 3 years until their switch to the 4-3. A 2-down run-stopper who won?t provide much as a pass rusher, or Howard Green, NT/DE, 6?2?, 320 lbs., Run-stopper, a bit more pass-rush. They could also trade for Sammie Hill, DT/NT, 6?4?, 330 lbs., 4th season. He had 80 tackles and 4 sacks in the last 2 seasons as a back-up, maybe a 4th rnd. pick. Or. Pat Sims, DT/NT, 6?2? , 330 lbs., With the Bengals having drafted Devon Still (2nd pick) and Brandon Thompson (3rd pick), should be available. Spent most of 2011 on IR, Had 2.5 sacks and 9 QB pressures in 2010 as a back-up.

If Brandon Flowers is hurt, and stays hurt, who will take over as the Chiefs number one corner? Jalil Brown doesn?t look like the immediate solution, even if he might be that someday. There are some unknowns about Stanford Routt. The Bleacher Report says CB Terrence McGee may be available by the end of camp,

Unfortunately, McGee might be the odd man out this offseason. The Bills drafted talented cornerback Stephon Gilmore with their first-round pick, who will come in and compete for a starting job. Buffalo already has Aaron Williams?who has a bead on one of those starting gigs thanks to a solid rookie season?and Leodis McKelvin.

There are many other intriguing cuts that may be in the work as well.

The Bengals have a logjam at LB, and because it looks like Vontaze Burfict is going to stick, Dontay Moch may be on the outside looking in when camp is over. I liked Moch when he was coming out of Nevada, especially because he runs a 4.44- 40 time.

Another potential area of weakness on the Chiefs roster, once again, is at backup quarterback. Ricky ?I-don?t-like-you-anymore? Stanzi is nowhere near to being the short term solution the Chiefs hoped he might be. Brady ?I?m-still-not-sure-about-you? Quinn is a big question mark. Chiefs back-up QBs should wear a big question mark instead of a number.

The Chiefs need a QB who is an experienced back-up with at least some credentials.

Are there any QB?s out there who fit that description? Two seasons ago the Carolina Panthers draft QB Jimmy Clausen. Last year they draft Cam Newton. Newton of course is a Pro Bowler and the face and future of the team and the league. Clausen is predicted, by his own coach, to have a future starting for another team. However, it?s not Clausen that I?m hoping to get cut. It?s the other backup, Derrick Anderson, who threw for over 3,700 yards for a Romeo Crennel-led Browns team in 2007. If the Chiefs could land someone like Anderson to backup Cassel, it would be the best backup they?ve had since Rich Gannon was in town. With Anderson currently serving as the Panthers? number two QB, the Chiefs would likely have to trade for him. Such a trade would be a positive move as long as they don?t weaken the existing starting line-up.

The problem I have with any of these suggestions is that they?re ho-hum. Business as usual. Worse yet, its the same-ole-same-ole second rate organization-on-a-shoe-string approach to player development that we?ve seen for years. At least Carl Peterson would land a big fish every now and then.

Second rate acquisitions of:
Matt Cassel: the player who invented the term ?career back-up?
Mike Vrabel: the player who was thrown in on the Cassel deal that made Pioli bite on the trade but, who was also on the far-back-nine of this career.
Chris Chambers: a San Diego throwaway. We should have trusted in that analysis because after the Chiefs gave him a nice contract, he turned back into the throwaway he is.
Thomas Jones: what was he good for? He was good for ? a season. Then if you subtract the ? season he took from Jon Baldwin, well, you do the math.

Pioli was also good for:
Mike Brown
Devard Darling
Sean Ryan
Bobby Wade
Dantrell Savage
Rudy Niswanger
Sabby Piscatilli

Scott Pioli may spend all of his time swinging the hammer, but he sure hits his thumb a lot.

Second rate draft picks:
Alex Magee: why? Just, why?
Donald Washington: with the 102nd pick the Chiefs could have taken Johnny Knox or any of 150 other players like Quinten Lawrence or Javarris Williams. What? Oh. Never mind.
Quinten Lawrence
Javarris Williams
Colin Brown
Jake O?Connell

I?ll give this to Pioli: every single one of the 2010 draft picks are still on the roster and look to contribute. The same might be said for the 2011 draft but, it?s too early to appropriately reflect on that draft.

The Chiefs home improvement project needs a great looking front porch?or how about one of those huge gnarly driftwood mantle pieces? At the minimum, the kitchen needs upgrading so they can get some cooking done.

And if the Chiefs can?t at least look good at home, they may be shopping for a new architect sooner rather than later.

So Addicts, if you were remodeling and had millions to spend: what would it look like?

iCal Automatically Knows What Time Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Are [Mac Tips]

iCal Automatically Knows What Time Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner AreThis is just one of those nice touches Apple added to OS X: iCal will try to guess the time of certain events based on their description.

If you add an event with "Breakfast" in the subject, it'll automatically set its time to 9:00 am. Same with lunch at noon, brunch at 11:00, and dinner at 8:00. Of course, not everyone eats meals at those exact times, but hey, it's not like it can read your mind?and it'll work in a pinch if you're just jotting down an event to remember it, exact time be darned.

Update: Looks like we posted this one this morning. Sorry for the duplicate!

Report: Foo Fighters do last show for 'long time'

LONDON (AP) ? Music industry online magazine NME says the Foo Fighters have played their "last show for a long time," but an official familiar with the group says it has more concerts scheduled.

As the group wrapped up a gig in Reading, England, on Sunday, Frontman Dave Grohl told the crowd the tour, in support of its latest album "Wasting Light," would be its last ? a comment that has set fans in the Twittersphere alight with concern.

But the official says Grohl's comments were misinterpreted. The official said on condition of anonymity that the band has four U.S. shows in September and that after that it will take some time off "after touring the world for a year."

Grohl is the former drummer for the hugely successful band Nirvana.

Rover's first find in Sharp focus

The Mars rover Curiosity is indulging in a flurry of multimedia activity ahead of its science mission proper.

It sent the first image from its 100mm telephoto lens, already spotting an intriguing geological "unconformity".

Nasa also released a colour panorama of Mount Sharp, the rover's ultimate goal.

On Monday, the rover relayed "the first voice recording to be sent from another planet", and on Tuesday it will broadcast a song from artist Will.i.am as part of an educational event.

But alongside these show pieces, Curiosity - also known as the Mars Science Laboratory - is already warming up its instruments for a science mission of unprecedented scope on the Red Planet.

Nasa said that the rover was already returning more data from Mars than all of the agency's earlier rovers combined.

It will eventually trundle to the base of Mount Sharp, the 5km-high peak at the centre of Gale Crater, in which the rover touched down just over three weeks ago.

For now it is examining the "scour marks" left by the rocket-powered crane that lowered the rover onto the planet's surface, giving some insight into what lies just below it.

The rover will now employ its Dan instrument, which fires the subatomic particles neutrons at the surface to examine levels of hydrogen- and hydroxyl-containing minerals that could hint at Mars' prior water-rich history.

Another tool in its arsenal, the ChemCam, which uses a laser to vapourise rock and then chemically examine the vapour, will also have a look at the scour marks.

And the Sample Analysis at Mars or Sam instrument, itself a package of three analysis tools, has now been switched on and is being run through its paces ahead of "sniffing" the Martian atmosphere; the tests include analysing a sample of Earth air that was left in it at launch.

But what has caught the interest of Nasa engineers already is what is called an "unconformity" spotted in the rover's first images of Mount Sharp.

The term refers to an evidently missing piece in the geological record, where one layer of sediment does not geologically neatly line up with that above it.

Images from orbit had indicated that the lower foothills of Mount Sharp consisted of flat-lying sediments rich in "hydrated" minerals, formed in the presence of water, but that layers above seemed to lack the minerals.

Now, the rover's Mastcam - which provided the new colour panorama image - has taken a picture of the divide, showing sediments apparently deposited at a markedly different angle from those below them. Similar deposits on Earth can arise due to tectonic or volcanic activity.

Further investigation will have to wait some time however, as Curiosity takes a bit of a side trip.

The rover's multimedia streak will continue as it takes a short 10m drive and works on Tuesday to capture stereo imagery - like our eyes, combining two images to gain information about depth and distance.

At 20:00 GMT (13:00 PDT, 21:00 BST), it will relay a new song from will.i.am, to be broadcast on Nasa TV, as part of a primary educational initiative that will make use of Nasa technology including the rover.

On Monday, the rover received and beamed back a message recorded by Nasa administrator Charles Bolden, which read: "The knowledge we hope to gain from our observation and analysis of Gale Crater will tell us much about the possibility of life on Mars as well as the past and future possibilities for our own planet."

Next stop for the rover will be Glenelg, 400m to the east, which appears to be the intersection of three distinct geological regions - potentially rich pickings for the rover's suite of tools.

It will then set off for the base of Mount Sharp in a journey that will take several months.

  • (A) Curiosity will trundle around its landing site looking for interesting rock features to study. Its top speed is about 4cm/s
  • (B) This mission has 17 cameras. They will identify particular targets, and a laser will zap those rocks to probe their chemistry
  • (C) If the signal is significant, Curiosity will swing over instruments on its arm for close-up investigation. These include a microscope
  • (D) Samples drilled from rock, or scooped from the soil, can be delivered to two hi-tech analysis labs inside the rover body
  • (E) The results are sent to Earth through antennas on the rover deck. Return commands tell the rover where it should drive next

Some stuffs. Descriptive, I know.

I Was An Idiot

?I was an idiot.?

The therapist jerked in his seat, brimming with surprise at having finally heard the young man?s voice reveal anything other than polite greetings turned derision for their sessions. Three weeks of one hour-long silence per day between the doctor and his patient had almost made the professional lose hope.

?You were an idiot,? Thad Whittock repeated. ?Why is that, Iante??

The blond sat across from him, feet drawn up on the armchair as if he belonged there in his striped pyjamas, raised his head and shrugged. ?You know why,? he stated, lifting a hand to rub at one bruised eyelid. ?You?ve got it all written down in the file. What happened, that is.?

?You said ?I was an idiot?, Iante. Past tense. So you?re not an idiot now??

Iante took a moment to consider those words. ?No,? he replied. ?Not any more. I know better now.?

?When did you start being an idiot??

?I never had a chance,? Iante snorted, shaking his head. ?Never had a hope in hell.?

?You?ll need to elaborate for me, Iante.?

?Do you know it says ?Harri Clowes? on my birth certificate??

?I do, yes.?

?He?s not my real father. He died before I was born, my biological father. Mum says that he never even knew I existed. I don?t know if she meant to make me feel better by saying that or whether she was being honest, but it didn?t make it any easier. My father was a policeman. I?ve seen pictures ? I look an awful lot like him ? and in every single one he?s smiling, and so is my Mum. After he died? She doesn?t smile the same way.?

?She lost her husband and a fantasy of the perfect family,? Whittock ventured aloud. ?Are you surprised that she can?t smile now as she did then??

?Not surprised. I wish that she could?ve found reason to, though.? He picked at the cuff of his shirt and absently pulled a thread from the warm fabric. ?I wish that I could?ve made her smile properly again.?

?Perhaps you did,? the doctor offered. ?Perhaps you were her reason to smile, but??

?But Harri Clowes existed, and he ruined her life before I could even breathe.?

?Tell me how.?

?He knew she was vulnerable. He knew she was alone, still reeling from the loss of what had to have been the most amazing man she?d ever met. We were going to be a proper family. I was going to have someone to look up to and she?d have someone to look forward to seeing every single morning. Harri was neither, as much as he liked to pretend.?

?Are you in pain, Iante??

?Yes,? the trainee forensic pathologist replied sullenly, honestly, though the expression on his face clearly indicated towards confusion at the sudden segue. ?I?ve another hour before my next dose.?

?And another surgery before there?s a chance you can start to heal properly.? Whittock allowed the silence between them to linger for just a few seconds before he leant forward in his seat and gestured with a hand towards his bookcase. ?I?ve read each and every single one of these books, Iante, and they?re all on the subject of the human body. I don?t doubt that you?ve read quite a number of these texts too, but there?s something I want to ask a talented, aspiring doctor like you. Will you tell me why you believe that you?re still in this hospital, and why you?re still in my office for an hour every day after three weeks and four days of sessions??

?I?m still in the hospital because there were complications from my surgery,? Iante muttered. ?And I?m still in this room every day because my friends think I?ve gone crazy.?

?Not quite,? Thad chuckled. ?You?re still in this hospital because you still need to heal ? and most of the reason for that is due to the complications you?re dealing admirably with from your injuries. You?re still in this room daily because your friends are concerned about your mental health. You haven?t spoken to any of them, and you barely acknowledge their existence. You?re polite to the nurses ? you thank them for your medication and say ?please? when they ask if you?d like something. You?re always ready with a ?good morning? when you?re wheeled into this room, too. So tell me, Iante, does it really surprise you that your friends are afraid that something?s wrong with you??

?Something is wrong with me!? Iante snapped, throwing his legs off the chair so that he could level his eyes with the doctor?s. ?Something?s wrong with me and there isn?t anything I can do about it because it?s been wrong since before I was born.?

?Harri Clowes.?

?He has done nothing for me but make me feel like I?m useless. Like being abused is normal and natural and that it means love.?

?But you know this isn?t true.?

?I know that now. I know that after listening to Tommy rant about it for hours after I ran away from Matthew. I know that after listening to everyone who has never been in my situation tell me that it?s going to be okay. Why am I the crazy one for believing that nothing?ll be normal for me??

?Why would you say that, Iante? That nothing will be normal for you??

?I don?t want it to be normal for me! Normal for me is living with Harri. Or living with Matthew. That?s normal. That took up nearly twenty of my twenty-six years on this planet, and I don?t think people realise what becomes rational up here when they haven?t grown up like I did,? Iante spat, pointing toward his temple with a finger.

?One of your bosses left home at sixteen too, did she not??

?With James,? Iante agreed, relaxing back into his seat after having become so riled ? even such a small demonstration of disgust had tired him considerably. ?After her sister killed a boy from their school.?

?And you don?t think that she feels something like you do??

?Because her sister killed someone??

?She faced difficulty too.?

?Romanae?s father loved her. Her mother probably loved her from the moment she was born. When Romanae faced difficulties, her father was by her side constantly.?

?Why is she so different to you? She left when she was sixteen because she couldn?t handle it. You left at sixteen.?

?Maybe you should be asking how we?re similar. Her mother died to give them life. My father died before my mother even told him about me. Her father loves her dearly and always has. My mother barely existed for me. Romanae had friends and family who adored her. I never had that kind of support; I was the weird kid at school, the kid who had a strange name and always had bruises on his face.?

?Iante Clowes isn?t a typical Irish name.?

?No, it?s not. Maybe if I had been a stronger kid, no one would?ve cared so much about my name or that I went to school with unexplained marks.?

?You have a real issue with people in parental roles,? Whittock stated, brows furrowing. ?And I imagine authority figures also slot into that.?

?The only person who has ever done everything he could for me is Tommy,? Iante murmured, eyes on his knees. ?If it hadn?t been for me, he?d have killed Matthew the first time he hit me. If I?d swallowed my pride and went for help, Matthew?d never have been able to hospitalise me once, let alone twice.?

?You wouldn?t ever have been able to cope with that pressure, Iante, and you knew that six years ago just as much as you know that now.?

?I should?ve been stronger. I should?ve trusted Tommy.?

?I think you did the right thing.?

?You?re an idiot, too.?

?Perhaps,? the doctor allowed, smiling softly. ?Iante, you?re a wonderful young person. You?re far stronger than you give yourself credit for, and I think that it?s time you and I did something productive.?

The young medic blinked in surprise, but pulled his feet back up onto the armchair to watch the doctor stand and head to his bookcase.

?I?m sorry for calling you an idiot.?

?No, I don?t think you are,? came the amused reply.

?I am,? Iante replied in earnest. ?You?re not an idiot. You?re where I want to be. Helping people with a fancy title and the respect that comes from it.?

?You?ll get there ? especially if you?re willing to go along with my productivity plan.? Thad returned to his seat with three books in his grasp. ?You must be bored brainless in the hospital. If you?re not ready to open up to your friends, that?s perfectly alright. I won?t force you to lay out your emotions for everyone to see, but in this room, Iante, you?re not under social obligation to make me think you?re coping. I promise to allow you the use of my miniature library here ? as many books as you want, as often, and any questions you have along with the texts even after you?re out of this building permanently ? if you promise me that you?ll make the same progress every day that you have today.?

?I can?t promise that,? the blond answered, morose. ?Sometimes I really just can?t get the words out. It?s like I?ve forgotten English.?

?Sometimes progress isn?t telling me your life history and what you feel about it,? Whittock nodded. ?You can promise whatever you like. I just need to know that you?re going to trust that I?m here to help you.?

?I can?t.? Iante sounded utterly broken when he muttered the two simple syllables. ?I can?t trust you.?

?I don?t need you to trust me. I just need you to trust that I?m going to do everything I can to help. For the hour a day you see me, I?m your doctor and I?m the only one you need to talk to. Can you do that for me, Iante??

?Just? just trust that you?re here to help me and that I only have to talk to you? Even if it?s just about the books?? the patient added, voice tinged with hope.

?Even if it?s just to talk about the books,? Whittock promised. ?First we?ll work on communicating. Then, if you still don?t feel like you can talk to your natural support group, your friends, you and I can talk about what happened. Or anything else.?

The doctor handed a book to Iante and raised an eyebrow.

?I?ve got twenty minutes until my next patient arrives, Iante. Mind filling our usual silence with some talk about your pathology training??

For the first time in three weeks, four days and nineteen hours, the blond smiled.

WiFi alliance begins Tunneled Direct Link Setup certification, hopes to improve media streaming

You can thank the WiFi alliance for a number of things, and soon you can add TDLS to that list. That's Tunneled Direct Link Setup, if you were wondering, and it's a standard for creating direct links between devices. If this sounds familiar, that's understandable, but TDLS has its own tricks, like working in the background of a network to optimize performance, and it can even work over a WiFi Direct connection. For example two compliant devices can measure the signal strength on the network, and determine if a direct link would be better or not. TDLS also allows devices to communicate at the fastest standard available (802.11b / g / n etc.) even if this is superior to that available on the rest of your hardware. As this is a client-based protocol, you won't need to upgrade your access point either. If this hasn't got implications for better media streaming written all over it, we don't know what has. Especially as the certification is available to TVs, tablets, phones, cameras and gaming devices. There's only a handful of test products sporting the official approval at this time, but with names such as Broadcom, Marvell and Realtek in the mix, it shouldn't be long before it starts finding its way into front rooms and pockets proper.

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 26, 2012 Treatment with an agent that blocks the oxidation of an important component of the mitochondrial membrane prevented the secondary damage of severe traumatic brain injury and preserved function that would otherwise have been impaired, according to a research team from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Graduate School of Public Health and Department of Chemistry in a report published online today in Nature Neuroscience.

Annually, an estimated 1.7 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) due to traffic accidents, falls, assaults and sports participation, said the study's senior author Hlya Bay?r, M.D., associate professor, Department of Critical Care Medicine, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She added that 52,000 of those injured die, and 85,000 are left with significant disability.

"We don't yet have a specific therapy for TBI, but can provide only supportive care to try to ease symptoms," Dr. Bay?r said. "Our study drug shows promise as a neuroprotective agent that might help address this important public health problem."

For the study, the research team conducted a global assessment of all the phospholipids in rat brain cells. This revealed that damage from TBI was nonrandom and mostly involved cardiolipin, a phospholipid that is found in the membranes that form mitochondria, the cell's powerhouse. They noted that in the healthy animal, only 10 of the 190 cardiolipin species were modified by oxygen, but after a brain injury, the number of oxidized species rose many-fold.

The researchers then developed an agent, called XJB-5-131, which can cross the blood-brain barrier and prevent the oxidation of cardiolipin. Using an established research model of severe TBI, the agent or a placebo was injected into the bloodstream of rats five minutes and again 24 hours after head injury.

In the weeks that followed, treated animals performed akin to normal on tests of balance, agility and motor coordination, learning, and object recognition, while placebo-treated animals showed significant impairment. The results indicate that blocking cardiolipin oxidation by XJB-5-131 protected the brain from cell death.

"The primary head injury might not be that serious," Dr. Bay?r noted. "But that initial injury can set into motion secondary cellular and molecular events that cause more damage to the brain and that ultimately determine the outcome for the patient."

She added that a targeted oxidation-blocker might also be beneficial in the treatment of other neurological disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, and stroke.

Pairing 'Angels' With Cancer Patients - KPLR 11

CHICAGO (CNN) ? Just two weeks after his wedding, Christophe Quancard was diagnosed with glioblastoma, one of the deadliest types of brain tumors.

He was only 35 years old. The news was devastating.

?In our age group, no one is ready for the diagnosis, (or) the possibility,? Quancard said. ?I mean, we know it?s out there, but you didn?t think it would happen when you were still young and had so many other things that you were thinking about.?

Quancard?s team of doctors encouraged him to get in touch with a group called Imerman Angels. The nonprofit matches cancer patients with cancer survivors so they can receive support from someone who has been down a similar path.

Within a few days, Quancard was talking to Greg Cantwell, a 38-year-old survivor of late-stage brain cancer.

Cantwell was diagnosed eight years ago, when his son was 1, and had hoped to live until his son was at least 5.

The boy is now 9. Cantwell is living proof that cancer is not a death sentence. And his experience has given Quancard much-needed help ? and hope ? during a difficult time.

?You don?t know what?s really going to hit you emotionally or what kind of therapies you may not have thought of, how to get help, how to make the best use of the resources you have,? said Quancard, 36. ?You really need someone who?s been through this to help you. ? Somehow it makes it so much easier, even in the very hard parts that are coming.?

Quancard is just one of thousands of cancer patients who?ve found one-on-one support through Imerman Angels.

?We (want) to make sure that people that are diagnosed with cancer are able to reach a survivor who can look them in the eye and say: ?I?ve been there. I beat it. And so will you,? ? said Jonny Imerman, a cancer survivor who started the group in 2002.

Imerman was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2001, when he was just 26 years old. He went through a rigorous chemotherapy treatment that sometimes would last eight hours a day.

One year later, doctors found more cancer, and Imerman underwent a procedure to remove four tumors from his spine.

Now 37, he says he was fortunate to have the constant support of family and friends as he battled the disease.

?They kept me going,? he said. ?With so much support, I did not have a chance to lose hope.?

But other cancer patients between the ages of 15 and 39 are not always as fortunate. The National Cancer Institute recently reported that progress in treating adolescents and young adults has stagnated. Seven out of 10 patients in the age group go on to live at least five more years, but that statistic hasn?t improved in 30 years.

?Young adults are kind of a lost group of oncology patients,? said Dr. Peter Shaw, director of the Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Program at Children?s Hospital of Pittsburgh. ?They are in a gray area between pediatric and adult care. Unfortunately, they don?t always find their way to timely, optimal medical care.?

There are several reasons why, Shaw said.

?They historically have been the least-insured age group in the U.S., most physicians are less suspicious of cancer in healthy young adults, and many of these patients ? once diagnosed ? may still feel invincible and be in denial, leading to less compliance with their treatments,? he said.

During Imerman?s five-month treatment in 2001, he would walk the hospital halls in Detroit and see young cancer patients who were alone and struggling.

?Everyone is like a caged animal in these rooms. They were lying in bed, motionless, watching television or staring in space. ? You could see the fear in their faces,? Imerman said. ?And I felt guilty as I walked down the hallways and looked in these rooms. And finally ? I just walked in with my I.V. pole one day. ?

?(I said:) ?What kind of cancer do you have? And what kind of chemo do you have?? ? These people were like open arms. They were so excited to have a visitor to talk to them.?

Imerman began engaging other patients and offering support and camaraderie.

?It was instant friendship,? he said. ?You?re not talking surface level. You?re talking about life and death. My goal was to get in there and motivate patients so that they wanted to jump out of their chemo bed and literally start swinging at this thing.?

When Imerman was deemed cancer-free, his health improved and his spirits soared along with his dreams to offer hope to more cancer patients.

Imerman started reaching out to doctors and hospitals and was referred to other cancer survivors. He collected data, spread the word and became a matchmaker of sorts.

Today, nearly a decade later, Imerman Angels has a database of more than 4,000 survivor mentors. The group carefully pairs a cancer fighter with a mentor who had the same type of cancer. And caregivers, such as a spouse, parent, child or friend, can also be paired with other caregivers and survivors.

The group tries to connect people who live in the same city and can meet in person. But its database also extends overseas, and some pairs communicate via phone and Skype. On average, the group creates five to seven pairs a day.

Imerman Angels has made more than 8,000 matches in more than 65 countries.

?(Our) cancer survivors have amazing stories and volunteer to give their story back, to help somebody else out with the same cancer,? Imerman said. ?We share stories. We listen. We learn. We become close and connected, because we expose probably the most vulnerable time of our lives. ?

?I think the bigger picture ? and what we need to do in a cancer world ? is create more friendships.?

Survivors who have navigated the often-complex cancer system can share what they know with patients who are starting at square one and are often unsure where to turn.

?There?s a great benefit for an individual to be able to contact somebody else who?s struggled with the same problem,? said Dr. Steven T. Rosen, director of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University. ?To be able to get the perspective of another patient who can tell them about what to anticipate and also to see someone who?s been through the process, who?s had a good outcome and that there?s a light at the end of the tunnel. In many instances ? it improves their quality of life dramatically.?

Imerman Angels runs on donations, and the majority of its small staff are cancer survivors. Although the group accepts men and women of any age, more than half of its roster is between 18 and 40.

?Imerman Angels is incredible in the sense that they?re able to pair you up with someone that looks just like you and that gets it and that can tell you it?s going to be OK,? said Jenna Benn, who was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma when she was 29. ?All of a sudden, your reality doesn?t seem so strange. It seems sort of normal. As much as I didn?t want to be a part of this club and I didn?t ask to be here, I?m really happy that I have this community that Jonny has built.?

Imerman continues to make his rounds at the oncology wings of Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, just like he did in Detroit more than a decade ago.

?I?m a survivor. You?re going to be, too,? he regularly tells patients.

For Imerman, mentoring patients has helped him to live in the moment and embrace life without fearing a recurrence of cancer.

?I don?t really count the days since cancer, because it?s like every day?s a birthday,? he said. ?Every day is a good day. You?re happy you woke up. ? Life is amazing.?

Should kids learn programming as a language? - TechsTalk ...

When I was a kid I read some science fiction about computer as a machine that produces copies of anything you can imagine. Super machine could make an ice cream cone or beautiful sail boat... Nice, isn?t it? The reality came way later, when I saw first device called computer. I wasn?t disappointed that this computer cannot produce any ice cream but I saw a long walk to freedom of conversation with computer. As computer is very obedient to you commands, the commands need to be very precise.

Modern kids are more and more involved in accomplishing various computer related tasks and simple knowledge of keyboard is definitely not enough. Even though programming languages are getting more and more simple, you still need to commit your time to learn basic rules of programming. You cannot speak the language of computer the same way as you speak human languages. The computer language doesn?t allow approximation and missing some precision in giving initial information may cause fatal error. Learning computer programming language is mostly learning keyword and structures. Structures of programming languages is the bunch of libraries that are pre-installed in certain language to accomplishing various, often used, tasks. So, as in English you can say to other human being that you want to eat, and your correspondent will reply with the dish he thinks you want to eat or suggest a few options from those available in his refrigerator. Computer will not understand this command at all, because you need to be more precise and call certain structures before you even make a general order of food. Other word you need to firstly create menu and then order from it.

So, the learning of programming language can be compared to learning physics or math but not language.

Future development of computer programming languages and computer hardware may allow some form of? pseudo intellect of machine and then machine can learn to accept approximate commands. But if and when this time comes surely programming will be not really something that only programmer can do, but normal user with basic knowledge of computer may create necessary program for current needs. However, there will still be professional engineers who will continue development of programming languages itself.

So, back to the question ? should our kids learn programming as a language in schools. The answer is definitely YES, however,? programming language should not be learned the same way as human language but rather as math. ALSO, there can be computer literacy discipline that could be studied the same way as human language and this way new generation of people on our planet will have both: geek engineers who will be able to develop programming languages, and regular computer users who will be able to use all computer power.

Lets try to imagine future generation of computer :

1. it will be powerful machine that will not have processor clock measured by Hertz and will not have number of cores. Most likely processor speed will not be limited, the same way as human brain.

2. The size of memory will not be limited either. Most likely both of the above parameters, technologically will be relative to those biological analogues of human resources.

3. Most likely all computers will loose their individuality and information data will not be located on one machine but all machines will be connected together

4. There will be no applications or just one application ? programming interface. User of computer will just describe to intellectual machine? their tasks and machine itself will make temporary application to accomplish the task.

5. Machine will use data available for all machines in the world and this data will be updated during work of other users, other words ? machine will learn all the time, and will be smarter every second.

Well, those are still in science fiction stage, but remember I mentioned what was science fiction for me in 70-80th? Yes, computer itself was science fiction.

Drayton FlorenceAP

Broncos cornerback Drayton Florence has hung around a decade in the NFL by being a smart, steady pro.

Now that he?s closer to the end of his career than the beginning, he?s thinking about looking for them rather than being one.

Florence told Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post he wants to get into personnel when he?s finished playing.

?Just knowing what to look for in a player, I think I have that and would like to see what the opportunities are at some point,? Florence said. ?I?ve been in the league 10 years, I?ve seen all types of different players, body types. You?ve got to get the right type of player to fit the scheme that you?re running.

?It will be an interesting task, I think it would be a good fit for me. A lot of guys really don?t do it, but I?ve been around football all my life. This is what I know. I?m not going to go try to be a chemical engineer when I?m done playing. This is what I?ve been doing. I want to stick to what I know.?

The Broncos are like many teams, whose front offices contain several former players, including director of player personnel Matt Russell, assistant director of college scouting Lenny McGill and area scout Cornell Green.

Florence said he looks at film differently now, thinking how he?d evaluate players as a scout.

?I probably look at it more now from a personnel standpoint when I?m breaking down my opponent. How they put their teams together, what kinds of players that have that fit or don?t fit,? he said. ?In the preseason, especially, I kind of look at the defensive backs, the receivers and I?m always looking at the quarterbacks.?

A lot of players think the way Florence thinks, until they get into it.

The scouting world is a lot more of a grind than many realize, and especially if they?ve made a little money, it proves to be more work than many former players want.

It?s far from necessary to have played to evaluate, but smart bosses put together a blend of perspectives which includes former players, to make sure they get a broad range of opinions.

The pay?s not quite the same as playing, so Florence shouldn?t be in a hurry, but at least he has a plan.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? LL Cool J plays a special agent on TV's "NCIS: Los Angeles," and now he's caught an actual bad guy.

The 44-year-old rapper struggled with and subdued a suspected burglar early Wednesday morning at his home in the Studio City area, police said. He was not hurt.

Los Angeles police Sgt. Frank Preciado said Wednesday that police got a 911 call shortly before 1 a.m. from the performer's daughter, who said an intruder was in their home and her father was holding him downstairs.

"A physical altercation occurred between the suspect and the victim, James Todd Smith, also known professionally as LL Cool J," said Preciado. "My understanding is he just had him in custody with his physical strength."

A 58-year-old suspect was taken to the hospital and was expected to be arrested on suspicion of burglary. His identity wasn't released but there was no indication that he knew LL Cool J or had a personal vendetta, LAPD spokesman Richard French said.

French said the suspect appeared to be a homeless person.

Early police information said the man received minor bruises. However, the Los Angeles Times (lat.ms/OS63xL) cited police sources it did not identify as saying the suspect received a broken nose and jaw in a "knock-down, drag-out" fight.

French said he had no details about the man's injuries or how he may have gotten into the home, a walled and gated mansion in a wealthy hillside section of the San Fernando Valley that's not far from major studios.

"LL Cool J, and his family, are safe and thank everyone for their thoughts and concern," said a statement released by his publicist, Rhett Usry. "As a father, husband and citizen, he is committed to keeping his family safe and is cooperating with authorities on this private matter."

LL Cool J has had musical hits such as "Mama Said Knock You Out" and "I'm Bad," and has starred in films including "Any Given Sunday."
