iPhone And iPad Continue To Reign Over Developer Interest, But Cross-Platform Apps Are Now On Everyone?s Mind

appcelerator-platform-interestApple's iPhone and iPad devices are still the most desirable platforms for developers, according to the latest Appcelerator/IDC quarterly report, grabbing 89 and 86 percent of interest respectively among a pool of 2,749 respondents. Android isn't far behind in smartphones, with 77 percent of interest, but trails considerably on tablets with 64 percent. The good news is that most developers are looking to build cross-platform apps instead of targeting just one, with 49 percent of respondents aiming for two platforms, and 31 percent going after three different operating systems.

The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science at the New York Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, has developed an unprecedented global research agenda for the nutrition science community, policy makers, and global leaders. Developed through research and insights from more than 300 experts in nutrition science and public health, the agenda identifies critical research and knowledge gaps that hamper the development of effective, evidence-based interventions to tackle malnutrition.

Experts will present and discuss this agenda and explore how to effectively translate the findings into action and help improve human nutrition worldwide.

WHEN: 8:30 a.m., Monday, December 17 (Keynote address will take place Monday. The conference will continue throughout the day on Tuesday, December 18.)

WHERE: The New York Academy of Sciences Conference Center
7 World Trade Center, 250 Greenwich Street, 40th Floor, New York, NY 10007

WHO: Interview and photo opportunities will be available at the forum with:

  • Francesco Branca, MD, PhD, The World Health Organization
  • Mandana Arabi, MD, PhD, The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science
  • Additional speakers include representatives from China, Malaysia, South Africa, Qatar, Canada, the Netherlands, and more

WHY: The global crisis of malnutrition affects two billion of the world's seven billion people. Its effects are devastating and extend far beyond health outcomes: malnutrition on a global scale can affect workforce capacity, threaten political stability, and disrupt economic progress. However, a lack of knowledge persists about the complex factors contributing to this global problem and the most effective ways to address it. To achieve real impact, research gaps must be identified and addressed before effective interventions can be developed at the national and local levels. A focused and science-based approach can help activate critical research and spur public policy changes to tackle malnutrition in developed and developing nations.

Committee criticises Comms Data Bill draft ? Coadec

By Alexei Kuznetsov AKA Ring0 [Public domain], via Wikimedia CommonsYesterday a cross-party committee of both houses appointed to scrutinise the draft Communications Data Bill released in June, published its report which concluded that significant changes need to be made to the Bill.

The draft Bill aims to ?to maintain the ability of the law enforcement and intelligence agencies to access vital communications data under strict safeguards to protect the public, subject to scrutiny of draft clauses? but has been met with significant criticism over the scope and technical viability of the proposals.

We submitted evidence to the Committees inquiry highlighting the potential damage the Bill in its current format could do to small business, innovation and the UK?s reputation as a good place to start a digital business. You can read our submission on the committee?s page on the Parliament website (PDF, Page 120).

Coadec were quoted in an article in the Financial Times this morning welcoming the Committee?s conclusion on the impact the draft Bill could potentially have on business. Below are links to some responses and articles on the committee?s report available online.

Yahoo! Makes Its Second Major Upgrade In Two Days: Flickr For iOS Overhauled, Major Update For Web

8255940378_ab063a0162_zAs soon as Marissa Mayer was named Yahoo’s CEO, people were extremely loud about “saving” Flickr. What’s left of the passionate photo community have been waiting for innovation, something that they can get behind and feel good about when they’re spending their time using the site. Today, the company has released a completely overhauled version of Flickr for iOS, its first update since Dec 21, 2011. You read that right, the app hasn’t had an update since last December. For some of us, we’ve moved on to other photo hosting and sharing services, and companies like Facebook and Google have taken a major bite out of Flickr’s powerful photographic stronghold. I’ve personally let my Flickr Pro account lapse, because there just wasn’t enough value in continuing to go back to it. The site itself felt outdated, the features just weren’t up to par with other services, and there was a bit of uneasiness on what the direction of Flickr was. The company hopes that this will change at least some of those fears. It makes sense, since the iPhone has been the most popular “camera” on Flickr for the past seven years. Twitter Cards support? Have no fear. Nothing will be cut off, cropped or flat out not displayed. Flickr VP, Brett Wayn says: Our view on that is simple, the creator who is creating content has clear sharing intent, that’s their decision. We want to make the photo look as good as it can to take advantage of all platforms. Flickr, the way it should be on mobile The one thing that’s quite obvious with Flickr’s iOS overhaul, as well as the web updates that were pushed today, the company is going for consistency, everywhere. When users are on a mobile device, they should have a comfortable and familiar experience similar to what they’ve experienced on the web, and vice versa. To date, Flickr has simply not cashed in on that promise, but today’s update certainly pushes Yahoo in that direction. It was quite clear with Mail’s upgrade yesterday that this is an important mission for Yahoo! The new navigation on desktop, complete with focus on Groups and broken out Upload link: Have a look at the before and after of Flickr for iOS (last year’s on the left): Let’s be completely honest here, the app you see on the left, the one from last year, is a piece

Indians trade Shin-Soo Choo to Reds

CLEVELAND (AP) ? The Cleveland Indians have traded outfielder Shin-Soo Choo and infielder-outfielder Jason Donald to the Cincinnati Reds for outfielder Drew Stubbs.

The deal came Tuesday night. The Indians are working on other deals, including one that could include shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera.

Choo, who has been Cleveland's primary right fielder for the Indians since 2006, will likely play center and bat leadoff for Cincinnati.

Dealing Choo was almost a necessity for the Indians. He was entering the final year of his contract and is eligible for free agency in 2013. The Indians have not been able to work out a deal with agent Scott Boras, who has turned down several extensions in recent years.

The 30-year-old Choo batted .283 with 16 homers and 67 RBIs in 155 games last season. Donald hit .202 in 43 games.

Stubbs has played center exclusively for the Reds. He batted .213 with 14 homers and 40 RBIs, and struck out 166 times in 493 at-bats.

The Collector's Lair

Collection

Police are slowly giving up as a dangerous sociopath continues to abduct and kill victims across the state of Maine. The ones kept alive have special talents, and are part of his collection, kept to entertain him as time drags on. [LAST TRY.]

I have tried to find some pictures for this, but I have found none that match the images in my mind. So I am going to try and explain this as well as I can to you.

The Collector's lair is a warehouse, a large one, abandoned in the middle of the forest near the coast. These woods stretch for miles and have been unmarked by human hands for a long time, s it was one the perfect places for the Collector to hide. Inside the warehouse, it is dank and dark with cracked boards. But underneath, you will find clean, expensive looking rooms where the Collector and his helper sleep along with a kitchen near the second level doorway leading to where the victims are kept. Another story down, you will walk into a room with unbreakable glass that has speakers, control panels with buttons to control doors and other parts of the rooms, and cameras and video screens to monitor cells and other parts of the warehouse. The door is solid iron, and only the Collector and his helper have a key to lock and unlock it.

Beyond that small control room is a long hallway, with eight cells, four on each side. Each cell is small, but big enough to hold a bed, a toilet with a curtain around it, a sink, a table with a chair, and a rack with clothes on it. Each cell has a video camera placed at the top left corner near the door, aiming itself on the entire cell. The cells have solid, thick iron doors that can only be opened by the control room or one of the keys or a secret code number by the Collector and his helper, and have little mail box like openings on the bottom for meals to be delivered without opening the doors. There are bars on each side of the doors at the very top, and can only be seen out of using a chair to stand on top of. The walls inside this entire area are solid, dark colored concrete and is kept clear of mold and other foul or ill causing substances as the Collector is a very clean man. Showers are in a seperate room at the end of the cell block hallway, long with another special room that the Collector uses for torture or punishment. (I'll let the collector's player come up with the appearance of that room.) And to top it off, each Cell has a golden plaque at the top near the dim light that reads 1) Never try to escape 2) Never use physical violence against me, and 3) Never call out for help.

Out to the left of the left hand cells near the control room is a room with a bright light on the ceiling. It has four stations. One has a desk with a very expensive looking computer on it, and has no internet access and only word on it. This is on a fine, wood desk with a comfortable chair. Then, there is another desk filled with paper, pencils, paints, and other artistic utensils as well as an easel next to it. Third, there is a chair with a stack of song books with a microphone in front of it and a small pair of speakers near the chairs as well as a tape recorded on the microphone itself. Lastly, there is a large grand piano at the back of the room with a microphone taped to the top of the piano and sheet music lined up across the shelf above the keys. Each chair is chained to the ground, where there are shackles made for the ankles in case the Collector feels a need to restrain his victims. This room is called The Meeting Room.

To escape, you have to go up two floors. You have to make it through three main doorways. The control room, the second level, and then the third level doors with a key or a code that allows the doors to open. The nearest town from that warehouse is over ten miles away, and along the way there are too icy cold rivers shifting with ice. To leave, is almost impossible.
