Egypt protest blast was explosive device: sources

ISMAILIA, Egypt (Reuters) - A fatal blast during a protest against Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi in the Suez Canal city of Port Said was caused by a home-made hand grenade, security sources said Saturday.

After the blast late on Friday, which killed one man, traces of an explosive substance were found on the bodies of some of the 15 wounded. Ballistics tests were still under way.

Hundreds of anti-government protesters had gathered in a central square in the city, at the Mediterranean end of the canal, one of several small demonstrations around the country ahead of mass rallies on Sunday aimed at unseating Mursi.

The chairman of the Suez Canal Authority said on Saturday that canal authorities were coordinating with the armed forces and security and intelligence agencies to secure the key global waterway.

Traffic of ships and cargo through the canal remained normal, he said.

Cities around Suez have already been flashpoints for violence this year, causing minor stoppages through the canal.

Talk Mobile Apps Week Recap: The best things you said

While the first week of Talk Mobile 2013 was all about mobile gaming, in the second topic we tackled broader issues with apps, developers, and app stores. As with last week, we're working to move past the debates over features and specs and spark a discussion on what really matters: how these advanced devices have actually impacted our lives.

We're going to continue to tweak the Talk Mobile formula as we go, and your feedback is always welcome as we work to make Talk Mobile the best that it can possibly be. So feel free to sound off in the comments about what you think of Talk Mobile so far.

As with our first week's recap, we want to focus on the discussion that was generated, because that's really what we're after here. We've seen a lot of great comments spurring even better conversations about what's great and not so great about apps today, and we'd like to take a few minutes to highlight the best.

Sanofi wins diabetes drug approval in Japan

PARIS (Reuters) - French drugmaker Sanofi said it won approval from the Japanese government for its Lyxumia drug for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes in combination with basal insulin.

Lyxumia is part of a new class of diabetes treatments called GLP-1 analogues which prompt the body to release insulin when a diabetic's blood sugar level climbs too high.

Lyxumia is now approved in Mexico, the European Union, Australia and Japan, Sanofi said in a statement on Friday. A new drug application for lixisenatide in the United States is currently being reviewed, it added.

These Fur Coats Are Made Entirely of Human Chest Hair Because? Milk?

If you were an advertising executive tasked with selling chocolate milk, what approach would you take? Fun cartoon characters? Promoting the health benefits of calcium? Touting its delicious taste? Wrong, wrong, wrong. The right answer is to commission the creation of a fur coat hand-woven from over a million strands of male chest hair. Because nothing pairs better with food than human hairs.

Not-so eternal flame: JFK-linked memorial goes out

Clodagh Kilcoyne / Getty Images

Ireland's "Emigrant Flame" memorial was lit using fire brought from John F. Kennedy's grave.

By Ian Johnston, Staff Writer, NBC News

An Irish memorial lit using fire taken from John F. Kennedy's eternal flame at Arlington National Cemetery went out just four days later.

The late president's sister Jean Kennedy Smith, his daughter Caroline Kennedy and?Irish premier Enda Kenny?used torches on Saturday to establish the "Emigrant Flame" in New Ross, Wexford.

The flame forms part of a memorial to generations of Irish people who migrated to the U.S. and other countries, particularly during the Irish famine in the mid-19th century.

President Kennedy's last overseas trip, just five months before his death, was to his family's homeland of Ireland. This year the Kennedy family returned to Ireland for the 50 anniversary of his visit. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

John F. Kennedy, who visited Ireland 50 years ago, was the descendant of Patrick Kennedy and Bridget Murphy, who emigrated to the U.S. from New Ross during the famine period and later married.

Eamonn Hore, of Wexford County Council, confirmed that the Emigrant Flame had gone out on Wednesday night.

He said there had been a buildup of soot at the flame, which has sensors that can detect any problems and turn off the gas supply.

Hore said the council had miner?s lamps that were lit at Arlington so the Emigrant Flame can be restarted.

?It is a fact that with a flame like that as part of the maintenance anyway it will be switched off,? he said.

He said that it had been expected that during the first month at least they would have to make adjustments to the flame.

?It?s a matter of getting the oxygen levels right, the gas right and the position of the sensors,? Hore said.

Hore said the memorial is located about 100 feet away from where Kennedy and Murphy would have left for the U.S.

He said there was still ?great love and affection for the Kennedy family? in Ireland, adding that more than 30 Kennedy family members were present at Saturday?s ceremony.

New Ross Town Council Chairman Paul Crowdle holds the Kennedy Torch, lit from the Eternal Flame, near the gravesite of President John F Kennedy at Arlington National Cemetery on June 18.

Kennedy?s 1963 trip to Europe is famous for his ?Ich bin ein Berliner? speech, but Hore said his visit to Ireland had a ?similar if not a great impact.?

?We were really a very young nation,? he said. ?I think he just showed people what could be done. Basically he gave confidence back to the whole Irish nation at a time when we were only just finding out feet.?

On Saturday, Kenny said Kennedy?s visit ?remains one of the iconic moments of 20th century Ireland.?

?The powerful symbolism, memorable speeches and the warmth of the interaction between this Irish American President and the Irish public had an impact on both,? he said.

Witnesses still remember Kennedy's youthfulness and charisma and the way he joined in the singing of a ballad about a 1798 revolt against the British, Reuters reported.

?There was no visit that my father made as president that meant more to him that his visit to Ireland,? Caroline Kennedy said outside the small cottage where her great-great-grandfather was born and where her father sipped tea with relatives half a century ago. ?Growing up in our family, nothing was a greater source of pride than our Irish heritage.?

New bird species discovered in Cambodian capital

(AP) ? Scientists say they've discovered a new species of bird in Cambodia, not in some remote jungle but in the country's capital.

A statement released Wednesday by the New York-based Wildlife Conservation Society said the wren-sized Cambodian tailorbird lives in dense, humid lowland scrub in Phnom Penh and other locations just outside the city.

The bird is gray in color with a brownish-red cap and black throat. The statement said only one other bird species is unique to Cambodia, the Cambodian laughingthrush, found only in the remote Cardamom mountain range.

IRS screened liberals? 'Progressive' and 'Occupy' targeted too, says new IRS chief

IRS screening of groups seeking tax-exempt status was broader and lasted longer than has been previously disclosed, the new head of the agency acknowledged Monday.?

Acting IRS commissioner Danny Werfel testified on Capitol Hill in Washington earlier this month. President Barack Obama ordered Werfel to conduct a 30-day review of the IRS when he appointed him last month.

The Internal Revenue Service's screening of groups seeking tax-exempt status was broader and lasted longer than has been previously disclosed, the new head of the agency acknowledged Monday. Terms including "Israel," ''Progressive" and "Occupy" were used by agency workers to help pick groups for closer examination, according to an internal IRS document obtained by The Associated Press.

The IRS has been under fire since last month after admitting it targeted tea party and other conservative groups that wanted the tax-exempt designation for tough examinations. While investigators have said that agency screening for those groups had stopped in May 2012, Monday's revelations made it clear that screening for other kinds of organizations continued until earlier this month, when the agency's new chief, Danny Werfel, says he discovered it and ordered it halted.

The IRS document said an investigation into why specific terms were included was still underway. It blamed the continued use of inappropriate criteria by screeners on "a lapse in judgment" by the agency's former top officials. The document did not name the officials, but many top leaders have been replaced.

Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee released 15 lists of terms that the IRS agency used and has provided to congressional investigators. Some of the lists, which evolved over time, used the terms "Progressive" and "Tea Party" and others including "Medical Marijuana," ''Occupied Territory Advocacy," ''Healthcare legislation," ''Newspaper Entities" and "Paying National Debt."

The lists were dated between August 2010 and April 2013 ? the month before the IRS targeting of conservative groups was revealed. They ranged from 11 pages to 17 pages but were heavily blacked out to protect sensitive taxpayer information.

Neither the IRS document obtained by the AP or the 15 IRS lists of terms addressed how many progressive groups received close scrutiny or how the agency treated their requests. Dozens of conservative groups saw their applications experience lengthy delays, and they received unusually intrusive questions about their donors and other details that agency officials have conceded were inappropriate.

In a conference call with reporters, Werfel said that after becoming acting IRS chief last month, he discovered varied and improper terms on the lists and said screeners were still using them.

He did not specify what terms were on the lists, but said he suspended the use of all such lists immediately. Lists from April 2013 that were released included the terms "Paying National Debt" and "Green Energy Organizations."

Smithfield drops Paula Deen as spokeswoman

NEW YORK (AP) ? Paula Deen lost another part of her empire on Monday: Smithfield Foods said it is dropping her as a spokeswoman.

The announcement came days after the Food Network said it would not renew the celebrity cook's contract in the wake of revelations that she used racial slurs in the past.

Smithfield sold Paula Deen-branded hams in addition to using her as a spokeswoman. In a statement, the company said it "condemns the use of offensive and discriminatory language and behavior of any kind. Therefore, we are terminating our partnership with Paula Deen."

QVC also said it was reviewing its deal with Paula Deen Enterprises to sell the star's cookbooks and cookware.

"QVC shares the concerns being raised around the unfortunate Paula Deen situation," QVC said in a statement. "We are closely monitoring these events and the ongoing litigation. We are reviewing our business relationship with Ms. Deen, and in the meantime, we have no immediate plans to have her appear on QVC."

Several retailers, which sell Paula Deen cookware, were taking a wait-and-see approach.

Sears Holdings Corp. said it "is currently exploring next steps as they pertain to Ms. Deen's products." Target Corp. said it is "evaluating the situation." Meyer Corp., which produces the cookware under the Paula Deen brand, declined to comment.

Marty Brochstein, senior vice president of The Licensing Industry Merchandisers' Association, a trade group, said stores may have a tougher time determining whether to cut ties with Deen than Smithfield and the Food Network, where she has a public role.

"Once you take the wrapper off, her name isn't necessarily on every piece of merchandise," Brochstein said. "As a retailer or as a licensee, you have to evaluate. But you're probably not going to gain anything by overreacting."

Brochstein said that stores are likely closely watching sales of the merchandise and monitoring social media as they gauge how consumers are responding.

"We're in the midst of this. It hasn't played out," he added.

Deen's rapid fall from favor came after the 66-year-old Food Network star admitted in a deposition in a discrimination lawsuit that she used racial slurs in the past. Deen was asked under oath if she had ever used the N-word. "Yes, of course," Deen said, though she added, "It's been a very long time."

Deen insisted she and her family do not tolerate prejudice, and in a videotaped apology, she asked fans and critics for forgiveness. It had been posted online for about an hour when the Food Network released a terse statement that it "will not renew Paula Deen's contract when it expires at the end of this month." The network declined to comment further.

Las Vegas-based Caesars Entertainment Corp., which has Deen's restaurants in some of its casinos, said Friday that it "will continue to monitor the situation." Publisher Ballantine, which has a new Deen book scheduled to roll out this fall, used similar words.

Earlier Monday, NBC's Matt Lauer said Deen would appear Wednesday on "Today." Last week she abruptly canceled on the morning show before posting her videotaped apologies.

Bodies, bad parents scare up drama on 'Killing'

TV

Linden (Mireille Enos) looks out at the bags of bodies.

Carole Segal/AMC

Linden (Mireille Enos) looks out at the bags of bodies.

If you caught last week?s third-season premiere of AMC?s ?The Killing,? then you likely felt a slight sense of d?j? vu at the beginning of this Sunday?s episode, since it started out at precisely the same spot where we left off: with Linden (Mireille Enos) staring out over a sea of bodies. It isn?t long, however, before she?s joined by no less than two of her former partners, with Skinner (Elias Koteas) taking charge of the investigation while a decidedly annoyed Holder (Joel Kinnaman) snorts, ?Looks like you found the Seward file??

Howdy, partner

It never really results in any full-fledged in-your-face moments, but from a character development standpoint, it?s particularly interesting to watch the tension inspired by Linden?s decision to return to duty and deeply immerse herself in this new case. Linden and Holden discovered that they only step on each other?s toes when working independently, but to hear Reddick (Gregg Henry) tell it, everyone in the department ? with the apparent exception of Holder ? knows that Linden and Skinner used to have a thing back in the day. Based on Skinner?s wide-eyed reaction when Linden tells him that his wife knows about their former affair, however, he clearly believed that the whole thing had been successfully kept quiet.

Bullet Blabs

It?s pretty ghastly to see the bruises left on Bullet after Goldie?s attack last episode (and that?s not even touching on the residual psychological damage), but the scrappy young woman gets at least a bit of revenge by telling Holder where to find the limping pimp. Although Bullet?s suspicion that it?s Callie who?s being held hostage in the apartment proves false, the truth is, in its own way, even more disturbing: Reddick estimates that the girl who is in Goldie?s apartment can?t be any older than 12. There are a couple of disconcerting moments amongst teenage girls in this episode, actually, the kind that make you want to hold your daughter close and never let her go. Well, unless you?re Danette Lutz (Amy Seimetz), in which case you just shrug and say, ?Hey, I can?t control her. I never could.? Nice cop-out, Mom.

Slice and dice

After stumbling upon a razor blade lodged inside his bar of soap, Ray Seward (Peter Sarsgaard) spent the entire episode ramping up the suspense, coming disconcertingly close to whipping it out and using it on prison guard Francis Becker (Hugh Dillon). Unless it turns out to be some sort of ruse, however, it appears that Becker?s repeated taunts about Seward?s son and his damaged relationship with the boy caused him to turn the blade on himself. It?s a grotesque moment under the best of circumstances, but coming as it does in the wake of Becker?s comments, one can?t help but wonder further about what?s gone on with this father/son relationship that?s yet to be revealed.
