A first look at Blitz Brigade - an upcoming multi-player shooter from Gameloft

This one's not for the kids -- Blitz Brigade is set in WWII, and is a team-based multiplayer shooter (it reminds me of Battlefield Heros) with plenty of action, and plenty of graphic imagery. We don't know much more than that, only that it's coming to Android and iOS soon.

From the trailer, it looks like it will offer plenty of fun and plenty of blood, which should make it a hit. We'll know more when Gameloft shares a little. Until then, check out the video and imagine this one on your Android tablet.

By Aaron Couch, The Hollywood Reporter

Meet ?Chemistry Enthusiast,? a little guy who bears a striking resemblance to "Breaking Bad"?protagonist Walter White. He?s got Walter's trademark facial hair, glasses and hazmat suit. But while he may look like a Walter White Lego, officially speaking this "Breaking Bad"?figurine is not associated with Lego or the AMC hit.

Chemistry Enthusiast is a new, limited-edition product from Citizen Brick, a Chicago-based company which specializes in creating customized Lego pieces.

?I like to think I make stuff for guys that are like me,? Citizen Brick founder and "Breaking Bad"?fan?Joe Trupia?tells? The Hollywood Reporter. ?Adults who still enjoy playing with Legos.?

Trupia, the father of two young sons, started off his career as a printer and eventually began experimenting with customizing Legos. His company uses Lego parts and says it employs the toy giant?s technique for adding color to them.

In addition to the "Breaking Bad"?homage, Citizen Brick has also?tackled "The Wire,"?though most of its products are not TV-related.

Does the company fear facing the legal wrath of Lego or "Breaking Bad"?network AMC? Trupia hopes the companies will see his work as a fan's tribute and says he doubts his small operation is cutting into their profits.

Citizen Brick is doing a limited run of 400 Chemistry Enthusiast figurines with no immediate plans to produce more. They are selling for $15 each. The complete lineup of Citizen Brick figurines can be viewed?here.

Keith Rabois Leaves Top Operating Role At Square

16103v2-max-250x250Long-time investor and valley executive Keith Rabois is leaving his chief operating officer position at payment company Square, in a surprise announcement by the company tonight.?Chief operating officer Sarah Friar will be acting COO as it looks for a replacement. Rabois joined in August of 2010 and developed most non-product parts of the company, including?marketing, communications, business development, distribution, human resources and risk management according to his CrunchBase bio. There’s more than one way to decipher the reason based on the statements from Rabois and founder Jack Dorsey, below: Dorsey: Today I accepted Keith?s resignation from Square. When he joined, we had fewer than 30 employees and under 1000 active merchants. Today, over 3 million individuals and businesses are able to accept credit cards with Square, processing over $10 billion annually. We couldn?t have done it without him and we wish him well in his next opportunity. Rabois: It is amazing what Square has accomplished since August of 2010. When I joined, there were 17 engineers all reporting flatly to Jack. The local coffee shop served as our interview room. Leading our amazing crew has been the most rewarding professional journey of my life. I am forever grateful to Jack, for his confidence in me and to each and every member of the team for allowing me to learn from them. But every day matters. And it is better at this point for me to be doing something different every day. As a result, I?ve decided to resign from Square. I am very excited about what lies ahead for the company. Square could not be better poised for greatness. I will have more to share about my next opportunity soon. They both mention a next opportunity, which suggests that part was planned out. Having Friar coming in as an acting COO suggests that part was not — although Friar is widely respected, and her move into the position doesn’t necessarily mean his departure was a huge surprise internally. Rabois also serves on the board of Yelp and Xoom, is an occasional angel investor, and was an early executive at Paypal, LinkedIn and Slide. He didn’t comment when I reached him tonight, except to say that he’ll share more soon.

Hushed for Android Generates Throw-Away Phone Numbers for Private Calls in Over 40 Countries

Hushed for Android Generates Throw-Away Phone Numbers for Private Calls in Over 40 Countries Android (4.0+): Hushed generates disposable, throw-away phone numbers that you can use for incoming and outgoing phone calls and SMS. The app is ideal for communicating with anyone you don't necessarily want to have your number, like the person you're selling old furniture to on Craigslist or a blind date you're meeting for the first time.

Much like previously mentioned iPhone app Burner, Hushed can be used for any scenario where you need to receive calls or text messages privately, or just want to organize them by topic. You can create phone numbers specifically to post publicly if you're renting a room or selling something, and corral all of your calls and messages together accordingly. If you're traveling abroad, you can buy a number in the country you're visiting so you can be easily contacted by locals. Each Hushed number comes with voicemail, so you don't have to dump those calls into your normal voicemail inbox. When you're finished with a number, just delete it and it's gone forever.

Unlike Burner, Hushed works in over 40 countries, and allows you to choose phone numbers in any of those locations. Hushed numbers are good for 7, 30, or 90-days, and will set you back $1.99 each. You can use Google Voice to do much of the same, but considering the price and the international availability, this makes for a pretty decent alternative. The app is available now for free at Google Play.

Wile E. Coyote Teaches Math (And Despair) To Lucky Students In New Zealand

There's something about being upside down (from all of us in the Northern Hemisphere) that makes New Zealanders a little melancholy. At least that's my theory.

My evidence? Well, the other day, I was looking at a curriculum guide for math teachers ("maths" teachers, they would say) on the New Zealand Ministry of Education's site, where the text on top says, We want to equip "all New Zealanders with the knowledge, skills, and values to be successful citizens in the 21st century."

When you flip to the Maths page, here's what they think young citizens should know: Let's test, they say, the truth or falsity of Murphy's Law.

Not a cheery choice. You know Murphy's Law, right? It says, "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong." The folks at the Ministry don't like snappy English, so they wrote it this way:

"In this unit, students will explore the commonly held believe (sic) that if anything bad can possibly happen it will and at the most inopportune time."

It's fun to read the list of supplies teachers should bring to the classroom, the step-by-step instructions, (you can do that here) but what I liked best were the examples, the case studies. They are so painfully specific.

The Ministry says it's teaching statistics, but really it's teaching the philosophy of Wile E. Coyote of the Road Runner cartoons. These lessons look like math, not so deep down they are an immersion into the World of Despair. The Ministry recommends five examples of Murphy's Law. I've translated from New Zealand English when necessary. These are exact quotations.

"The first lesson will investigate the example of Murphy's Law relating to keys. It goes like this (act it out as you are saying it): There you are carrying a heavy box of things to the door or to the car boot [trunk]. You put the box in one arm to hold it while you reach inside your pocket for the keys and, you guessed it, the keys are in the other pocket! So you shift the load onto the other arm to get the keys out or you become a contortionist by trying to get it with the opposite arm. So Murphy's Law for keys says that keys are always in the pocket that you can't reach."

Students are then asked to design experiments to test the probability that keys will consistently lodge in the wrong pocket.

Which assumes you are about to eat a piece of toast buttered on one side, when it slips from your grasp and then you learn ...

"The more expensive the carpet the greater the chance that the piece of toast that falls off your plate will land butter side down."

Drawing pins, (I looked this up) are New Zealand English for thumbtacks. These thumbtacks are always slippery, which is how you discover ...

"If a drawing pin drops on the floor the chance of it landing sharp end up increases as its distance to the nearest bare foot decreases."

Which describes an urgent situation where you need to use transparent tape, which they call "cellotape," to quickly repair something. As you grope for the tape with your fingers, you discover that ...

"The more of a rush you are in the harder it is to find the start of a roll of cellotape."

Which transcends national boundaries and says:

"Whatever queue [line] you join, no matter how short it looks, will always take the longest for you to get served."

That's how they teach probability and statistics in New Zealand. Imagine spending a week designing experiments about frustrating supermarket lines, ungraspable tape, foot seeking thumbtacks and carpet soiling toast. You wouldn't want to leave your bed. But somehow, the Education Minister thinks thinking darkly is good preparation for a successful life in the 21st century. Could the Minister possibly know something we don't?

Though maybe this isn't fair. If you looked at my homework assignments in sixth grade, they were all about getting on a train leaving St. Louis at 6 a.m. and heading for Kansas City at 60 miles an hour, while someone else in Chicago at 4 a.m. was also going to Kansas City, but at 75 miles an hour, and I was supposed to figure out who got to Kansas City first. Did knowing who arrives first in Kansas City better prepare me for success in the 20th century? You bet it did! Look at me! I've got my own blog! So we should respect curriculum developers. They can read the future. They know what's coming.

Nintendo's Wii U Miiverse getting user communities, mobile access

Nintendo's Wii U Miiverse getting user communities, mobile access

Nintendo's Wii U-based Miiverse social network is also getting a big update later this year, including user-created communities, more than one community per title, updated usability, and a more advanced filtering system. That's in addition to a mobile phone-based application, all arriving in 2013 -- you'll be able to access the Miiverse via mobile phone a bit earlier. "Initially the experience will be browser-based, but Nintendo plans to create a dedicated Miiverse app in the future," the official PR reads.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced the updates during a Nintendo Direct video presentation this morning, though he didn't give a concrete date for the Miiverse updates or the mobile app ("spring" was the closest he got, and that's only applicable to mobile access, not the app). He did say that you'll sign into the mobile app using your Nintendo Network ID, and be able to access (and interact) with the Miiverse on-the-go.

Nintendo Outlines Its Vision for Wii U, Including Launching Virtual Console and How Miiverse and Second-Screen Gaming Features Will Continue to Evolve

NOTE: Multimedia available here

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Nintendo President Satoru Iwata unleashed Wii U news in an installment of Nintendo Direct today as he outlined Nintendo's future plans for the console. Iwata revealed how the Wii U launch lineup will be bolstered by a long list of top game franchises headed for the new console. These are games that longtime players and newcomers alike will love to play, and everyone will be experiencing them in new ways, thanks to the integrated second-screen experiences enabled by the Wii U GamePad controller. Iwata also detailed a number of enhancements designed to make the Wii U game experience more social, even if people are not playing in the same room.

"The fun of video games is not only just playing games, but also sharing experiences together with people - even though they live far away, their skill levels are different or their experience does not happen at the same time," Iwata said. "We want Wii U to be the system that brings everyone together."

Game News

Two Zelda Games: Eiji Aonuma, the producer of The Legend of Zelda series, revealed two entries in the series for Wii U.
Super Mario is on His Way: The Nintendo EAD Tokyo Software Development team that created the Super Mario Galaxy games for Wii and Super Mario 3D Land for Nintendo 3DS is working on a new 3D Mario action game for Wii U. The game is scheduled to be playable at this year's E3.
Buckle Up!: Nintendo is also working on a new installment of the hit Mario Kart franchise. This game is also planned to be playable at E3.
Yarn Yoshi: The team that created Kirby's Epic Yarn is hard at work on the first console game to feature Yoshi as the main character since 1998's Yoshi's Story for Nintendo 64. Takashi Tezuka, director of Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story, is supervising the development of the new game, which is set in a fanciful world of yarn and textiles.
Wii Fit U Communities: New features coming to Wii Fit U include letting players create user communities on Miiverse from within the game. Community members can discuss exercises, BMI or weight changes and other health topics with other players as a way to encourage one another to reach their fitness goals. Similar functionality for other games is also planned.
Pikmin 3 Photos: The upcoming Pikmin 3 game includes a feature that lets players use the Wii U GamePad as a camera to share the same perspective as Pikmin and take close-up pictures of landscapes and creatures in the game and share them in Miiverse.
The Party Continues: A new installment in the Wii Party franchise is planned to launch this summer. The game features various play styles, including one that lets both players compete head-to-head using just the GamePad.
RPG Mashup: Nintendo has begun many collaborations with outside development partners to bring the best franchises and experiences to Wii U. In one such partnership, Nintendo and Atlus are working on a collaboration that features the Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei franchises. A video trailer for the game was shown in the Nintendo Direct.
A New Game from Monolith Soft: Tetsuya Takahashi and the team at Monolith Soft that worked on Xenoblade for Wii are working on a new game. A video trailer for the game was shown in the Nintendo Direct.
More on the Way: Iwata shared a new trailer for The Wonderful 101. That game and GAME & WARIO are scheduled to launch in the first half of 2013. Iwata also showed a new video for Bayonetta 2. That game and the new Super Smash Bros. installment are still on the way, but will need more development time before details can be revealed.
Virtual Console

Virtual Console for Wii U: A spring system update will add Virtual Console software to the Nintendo eShop for Wii U. The service will launch right after the spring update and will include a selection of NES and Super NES games, with Game Boy Advance games to be added in the future. The prices for NES and Super NES Virtual Console games for Wii U will be the same as they were for the Virtual Console on Wii. People who have already purchased the Wii version of a certain NES or Super NES Virtual Console game and transferred it to their Wii U console can buy the enhanced Wii U version of the same game for the reduced price of $1 for NES games and $1.50 for Super NES games.
Classic Games for 30 Cents! To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of the Famicom in Japan (which was known as the NES in the United States), Nintendo is making one NES or Super NES game available each month now through July at the anniversary price of just 30 cents. Each game will be available at that price for 30 days, and the first is the NES game Balloon Fight, which is now available in the Nintendo eShop for Wii U.
Social and System Enhancements

Miiverse Expands to Smartphones: Starting this spring, people will be able to browse Miiverse from their smartphones. Initially the experience will be browser-based, but Nintendo plans to create a dedicated Miiverse app in the future.
System Updates: Two major updates are on the way, one in the spring and one in the summer. The updates will introduce a wide range of functionality, such as Virtual Console capabilities and shortening the time it takes users to launch software or return to the menu screen.
Remember that Wii U features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit http://www.nintendo.com/wiiu. Standalone versions of the trailers for The Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, the new game from Monolith Soft and the collaboration featuring the Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei franchises can be found at http://www.youtube.com/nintendo.

(AP) ? With a steady din coming from the sea of orange behind the visitors' basket, No. 1-ranked Duke had a tough time making a shot.

The Blue Devils went more than 8 minutes without a field goal in the first half Wednesday night, and a sellout became a blowout for No. 25 Miami, which delighted a boisterous crowd with a 90-63 victory.

The defeat was the third-worst ever for a No. 1 team, and Duke's worst in nearly five years.

Durand Scott scored a season-high 25 points for the Hurricanes, and Kenny Kadji added a season-high 22. Shane Larkin had 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, and Durham, N.C. native Julian Gamble had 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Miami (14-3, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat a No. 1 team for the first time, taking control with a stunning 25-1 run midway through the opening half. The Blue Devils missed 13 consecutive shots despite numerous good looks, while four Hurricanes hit 3-pointers during the run that transformed a 14-13 deficit into a 38-15 lead.

Duke (16-2, 3-2) fell to 0-2 when playing on an opponent's court. The Blue Devils' other loss came at North Carolina State, a defeat cost them the No. 1 ranking.

They regained the top spot this week but seemed rattled by the capacity crowd, only the 10th in 10 years at Miami's on-campus arena. Students began lining up for seats outside the arena almost 24 hours before tipoff, a rarity for the attendance-challenged Hurricanes.

But South Florida loves a winner, and the Hurricanes are alone atop the league standings. They won their sixth consecutive game and beat Duke for the second straight time ? but only the fourth time in the 19-game series.

Miami had been 0-6 against No. 1 teams. Coach Jim Larranaga also beat a No. 1 team for the first time.

Seth Curry, Tyler Thornton and Quinn Cook went a combined 1 for 29 for the Blue Devils, who shot a season-low 30 percent. Rasheed Sulaimon led them with 16 points.

Duke went 4 for 23 from 3-point range, while Miami went 9 for 19 and shot 57 percent overall.

Miami senior center Reggie Johnson came off the bench in his first action since being sidelined with a broken left thumb Dec. 18. He had two points and five rebounds in 16 minutes.

Kadji made two 3s during the Hurricanes' first-half spurt, then capped it with a three-point play. Duke shot 22 percent in the first half, including two for 11 on 3-pointers, and trailed 42-19 at halftime.

There was no letup by the Hurricanes to start the second half. They scored the first seven points to lead 49-19.

A Duke mistake early in the second half had coach Mike Krzyzewski red-faced and on the court, screaming at his team. But he couldn't inspire a turnaround.

"Over-rated," the fans chanted with 3 minutes left. When the game ended, they poured onto the court and mobbed their team.

Miami, ranked this week for the first time in three years, improved to 8-0 at home.

How to Make Real Big Money Online | Internet Success Blog

Posted on January 22nd, 2013 by Joseph Pragasam in Make Money Online

The internet has evolved to be a lucrative medium to make money since the late 1990s. You might have heard about it all the time and you probably know it is. But how do you really make money online, I mean, make real big money online.

The truth is that millions of people try but only a few succeed. Why is this so? Because most people are seeking ways for a get-rich-quick system. But these people are not really to be blamed. Who wouldn?t want to be rich quick?

The hype about making money online overnight have been widespread on the internet that it?s become very hard to tell hype from the real deal. You probably heard about normal people like you and me, making 5 figure monthly incomes. While making this kind of money is very possible online, it doesn?t happen overnight. It involves effort, time and a bit of money. The truth is, the level of online income you make depends on how much and how smart you are willing to work.

So how to really make money online?

If you do a search on Google, Yahoo or MSN or read blogs and forums, you could find lots of information about ways to make money online.

But to make REAL BIG money online, there are only 3 main ways to do it

1. AFFILIATE MARKETING

Affiliate Marketing is the easiest and fastest way to start making money online. If you do not have your products or services to offer, then affiliate marketing is the one for you to get started with.

Affiliate Marketing is a very popular way of promoting internet businesses where an affiliate is rewarded for every customer provided by his efforts. It is a modern edition of compensating referrers with fees for the introduction of new customers to a business.

In Affiliate Marketing, you sell or promote someone else?s product or services. You just need to refer people to the merchant site and get paid a commission once a sale is made.

Promoting products or services as an affiliate have the following advantages:

  • Don?t require to have your own product or service
  • No troubles with payment processors
  • No stock inventories or shipping expenses
  • No troubles on treating refunds or returns
  • No employees
  • No customer service

You just need to drive traffic to the merchant site. The rest is taken care of by the merchant.

Affiliate Marketing is a ?pay-per-action? model. You are paid if the action is fulfilled. There are 2 main types of affiliate marketing models.

A) Pay-Per-Sale Affiliate Marketing

In this model, you, as an affiliate, send traffic to the merchant site in order to help him acquire new customers. You?ll receive commissions when a sale is made.

B) Pay-Per-Lead Affiliate Marketing

In this model, you send traffic to the merchant site in order to help him acquire new leads. You?ll receive commissions when potential customers fill out a form providing their contact information.

The wonderful thing about affiliate marketing is, you harvest a substantial share of the profit on each sale with lesser trouble. And while promoting them, it gives you hands-on experience on how things work in the area of ecommerce, and also get to apply the crucial marketing skills that would bring success in any online business you will be involved in.

2. SELLING YOUR OWN PRODUCTS OR SERVICES

Selling your own products or services, whether it?s physical or digital, is the other way to make money online. You?ll be a more successful Internet entrepreneur, selling your own products or services online.

When you have your own internet business selling your own products or services, you are in control over your business. You can twig and change things to make it more profitable. And in most cases, 100% of the sales amount goes to you.

Another significant advantage is that you are now the merchant. You can have affiliate program to get lots of affiliates to promote your products or services. That?s free marketing for you and only pays them commissions when they make a sale. Even, the internet big guns, like Amazon and eBay, have affiliate programs. They obviously know the value of affiliate marketing.

And as a merchant of your own product or service, you might need to hire employees when your business starts to grow. You also have more overheads, possible inventories to keep if its physical products and you need to have a shipping system in place.

A) Selling physical products

If you have offline business that sells physical products, having an online virtual shop will enable you to have greater exposure to more potential buyers from all over the world.

Even if you do not have a offline business that sells physical products, you still can make huge profits by being in the middle of the wholesalers and online customers. And also you don?t need to stock up inventory as you can use dropshippers to ship the inventory to the buyer.

Your online virtual shop can be on your own website or on mega online shopping portals like eBay and Amazon. The key to secure long term income is to source for in-demand products and sell them at a reasonable mark-up on the price that you yourself paid.

B) Selling digital products

Selling digital products, like eBook or software, is the most profitable internet business you can have. The good point about digital products is that it doesn?t require you to store any inventories as it can be downloaded instantly by customers. The only drawback is that it takes time to create your own digital products and requires good knowledge in your field.

When you are creating your product you will want to be extremely focused and create something of high value so your customers will keep coming back. If you spend some time planning and learning what your market wants and then give them the solution to their problem you will become very well respected in your field and it will help you make a whole lot more money than your competition.

Your goal is to make sure you are marketing to a market that has enough customers who will spend enough money so you can make a good income from your product launch. Keep in mind that if you are going to have any success in your internet business, you need to have a very high quality product to be able to sell copies of your product.

C) Selling your services

If you have specialised knowledge or skills like writing, copywriting, editing, transcription, website design, graphic design or computer programming, you can sell your services for a handsome profit through online freelancing.

Services such as Elance advertise outsourced remote working opportunities on behalf of thousands of businesses and companies looking to outsource the jobs they can?t or don?t want to do. It allows members to sign up to assignments according to their desired criteria. Depending on your skills and availability though, there is a lot of money to be made selling your services.

You can also market your specialised knowledge or skills through your own website or blog. The key to secure long term success is to provide excellent value and service beyond the customers? expectations.

3. SELLING ADVERTISEMENTS

The third way to make money online is through selling advertisements. The internet is the world?s greatest advertising medium, better than TV, Print and the Radio.

And Google is a perfect example for that. They make billions in revenue every month by allowing other website owners to advertise on their search result pages through a program called AdWords.

There are two ways to make money through advertisements. You can do it by earning commission from contextual advertising or advertising banners placed alongside your website or blog.

Contextual advertising is using ads based on the page content of the website or blog. The ads shown will always be relevant to the page contents. An array of third party tools is available for contextual advertising, but Google AdSense remains one of the more popular choice and easiest to use.

Through Adsense, you can earn a share of the revenue that Google earns from AdWords by displaying the same text ads on your site. In other words, you?re helping Google advertise and they pay you a percentage of what they earn.

You don?t have to have your own Web site or even figure out how to set up the advertising. Backing Up Important Information Using Quantum's Latest LTO-6 ...

The Quantum?s latest generation of ?Linear Tape Open? is a high performance backup solution which many large companies could benefit from. In addition, midsized businesses and fast-growing companies can use the device in order to save important information on these tapes. Companies relying heavily on research and development (such as pharmaceuticals, nuclear technology and weaponry, governmental organizations and other such businesses) could use the tape in order to save quite a lot of information because the tapes come with an enormous storage capacity of 6.25 TB (of uncompressed data) and 2.5 TB of native data. This would make the tape ideal for those wanting to store large files and data related to progress, taxes, balance sheets, secret projects and other such information which is best kept away and hidden.

The tape would also be good at protecting information due to the data encryption. Not only would this be good when it comes to parties seeking to ruin a company or get hands on important information but it would also be great at protecting the data from getting affected by external and internal threats such as viruses, hackers and other such threats. Since the tapes are an alternative source upon which the data can be saved (and they are not part of the computer?s software) they would be perfect for storage of data.

The Quantum?s LTO 6 tape solution can be trusted to retrieve voluminous information under unfavourable conditions. The new tapedrive family is efficient and very eco-friendly as they use less energy than the previous generations of the LTO tape drives (LTO1, LTO2, LTO3, LTO4 and LTO5). It comes with a backward compatibility of two generations which means it can read information stored on the Quantum LTO4 and LTO-5 tapes. This would remove the need for companies to get more tapes of previous generations in order to store data. This would also reduce the need for a company to purchase tape drives of the previous generations thus reducing power costs and the need for more tapedrives. The backup system also has a fast backup and restore performance of 400 MB per second and 1.4 TB per hour. This means that the tape can be used in order to retrieve quite a lot of information very fast.

It has WORM (Write Once, Read Many) capabilities which would enable companies involved in healthcare or in the financial industry to meet the tough demands and regulatory requirements. Investment would be protected due to the

The Quantum LTO ultrium 6 tape would be a cheap and efficient investment. Its performance is far better and faster than its preceding generations. The Quantum media is durable and supported by Quantum itself. This backup system is designed for the demanding large business industry and would benefit them in the long run.

In conclusion, there shouldn?t be any hesitation that the large companies should purchase the LTO 6 backup tape system, and enjoy high performance with its amazing features and colossal capacity. The data won?t fall into wrong hands as they are secured by the robust 256 bit encryption.

Taliban attack Kabul police facility for hours

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Taliban suicide bombers blew up a car and stormed Kabul traffic police headquarters before dawn Monday, setting off a gunbattle that raged for six hours and left at least 10 people wounded, police said.

It was the second brazen raid inside the Afghan capital in less than a week, a sign that the insurgency is determined to keep carrying out such spectacular attacks even as the U.S. and Afghan governments try to entice the Taliban into holding peace talks.

The raid started just before dawn when a suicide car bomber blew up his vehicle at the gate of the traffic police department building, close to the Afghan parliament and the Kabul zoo, said the city's police chief, Mohammad Ayub Salangi.

Then, another two or three attackers "armed with suicide vests and heavy and light weapons entered the compound," said a statement from Salangi's office.

According to the statement, six of the 10 wounded were civilians and four were members of the security services. There were no immediate reports of any fatalities among the security forces. At least two of the attackers were killed by police.

Shooting could still be heard outside the compound shortly before noon, but the announcement insisted the situation was under control and that the insurgents were surrounded.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack and said the target of the insurgents was a police training facility "run by foreign military forces."

The traffic police headquarters is located on a square leading to the parliament and next to the zoo. It is also adjacent to the Afghan border police headquarters. The facility, usually teeming with civilians seeking to get drivers licenses and registrations for vehicles, was nearly empty at the time of the attack.

Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi said the assault began with a suicide car bombing. Two insurgents, he said, were then shot and killed by Afghan forces while four police commandos were wounded.

Sediqi said Afghan forces were carrying out the operation without any assistance from NATO.

"This shows the ability of the Afghan forces, that they are leading the operation, "he said.

A unit of NATO special forces that trains and mentors Afghan police was at the scene but not taking part in the operation.

Merchant Gul Rahman, who owns a nearby shop, said he heard at least two explosions when the attack began, just before dawn. An Associated Press reporter at the scene said a number of big explosions were heard from inside and around the building, along with heavy gunfire.

Police officer Abdullah Hamidi said two of the explosions were caused by a man in a suicide vest and another by a car bomb.

It was the second insurgent attack inside Kabul in five days.

Last Wednesday, six Taliban suicide bombers attacked the gates of the Afghan intelligence agency in downtown Kabul, killing one guard and wounding dozens. Security forces killed all the attackers. The insurgents carried out the attack by driving a minivan loaded with explosives into a gate of the intelligence agency compound in the capital at noon. The other five attackers wearing suicide vests were in a second minivan that was also loaded with explosives. They were shot and killed and security forces later defused the bomb in their minivan.

The attacks came as the Afghan government has been pushing to get the Taliban to the negotiating table and as President Hamid Karzai and the U.S. negotiate for a quicker pullout of American forces. President Barack Obama said after meeting Karzai in Washington earlier this month that the U.S.-led military coalition would hand over the lead for security around the country to Afghan forces this spring ? months ahead of schedule.

Obama also said he agreed with Karzai that the Taliban should open a political office in the Gulf state of Qatar to facilitate peace talks.

Pakistan, the other regional powerbroker, also said earlier in the week that it plans to release more Afghan militant detainees in an attempt to boost the peace process ahead of the departure of international troops at the end of 2014. They made the announcement after meeting with Afghan and American officials in Abu Dhabi. Pakistan is thought to hold more than 100 Taliban prisoners and has so far released 26.

In general, Kabul has pressed hard for Pakistan to release its detainees, with some officials saying that they hope the released Taliban can serve as intermediaries. But Washington is concerned about specific prisoners who they consider dangerous and could return to the insurgency.

Solar 'blob' powers up the northern lights

Chad Blakley / Lights Over Lapland

Auroral lights glow in the skies over Sweden's Abisko National Park on Jan. 13.

By Alan Boyle

It might sound scary to hear that a giant blob of solar plasma is heading straight for us, but don't panic: Space weather forecasters say this solar outburst should deliver nothing more than a spectacular show up north.

"We're not going to be in for a big disturbance," said Norm Cohen, senior forecaster at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center in Colorado. "The northern tier of the United States might be able to see aurorae."

The outburst of electrically charged plasma ? also known as a coronal mass ejection, or CME ? blasted out from the sun on Jan. 13, sparking a radio blackout. It's taken several days for the blob itself to travel the 93 million miles between the sun and here, but forecasters now expect it to sweep over Earth's magnetic field early to midday Thursday.

When strong solar storms interact with the magnetosphere, they can spark satellite outages and disrupt electric power grids. Fortunately, this one shouldn't be that strong. (In geekspeak, let's just say that the maximum Kp is expected to reach no higher than 4. NOAA's space weather scale lays out the effects associated with higher Kp levels. Check out the prediction center's Facebook page for space weather updates.)

The most visible effect should be the northern lights generated by the interaction between the electrically charged solar particles and atoms in Earth's upper atmosphere, as explained on the "Causes of Color" website. This week's geomagnetic flare-up should add to what's already been a great week for auroral displays in northern latitudes.

Chad Blakley, a photographer at Sweden's Abisko National Park, sent in the beauty you see above. "It looks like there may be more powerful auroras in the days ahead," Blakley said in an email. "It is a very good time to be an aurora photographer!"

For more of Blakley's beauties, check out the Lights Over Lapland website or the LOL Facebook page.

Glowing reports are coming in from space as well. Here's a picture captured by the Department of Defense's DMSP F-18 OLS low-light imager on Jan. 13. The green outlines show Ireland and Britain down south, and Iceland and Scandinavia up north. The ghostly wisps crossing the frame are the northern lights. It's conceivable that the bright streaks you see in this satellite picture are the same ones visible in Blakley's pictures.

DOD via Mark Conner / SpaceWeather.com

The northern lights show up as ghostly streaks of white in a satellite picture captured on Jan. 13 by a low-light imager on the Defense Department's DMSP F-18 meteorological satellite.

Aurora photographer Chad Blakley (www.lightsoverlapland.com) shot this time lapse of an aurora shimmering through the clouds over Abisko National Park in Sweden on the night of Jan. 13. The video was assembled from nearly 3,000 still images.

Are there more solar blasts heading our way? SpaceWeather.com notes that a complex sunspot region known as AR1654 is pointing in our direction and has the potential to send more big blobs of plasma our way. But Cohen said the worries about that particular sunspot have been receding.

"It's been fairly quiet in terms of flare production," he said. "If anything, it's beginning to show signs of decay."

In fact, there's been increasing talk that this year's expected peak of the sun's 11-year activity cycle could be relatively wimpy. Cohen said he didn't want to make that sweeping of a prediction ??but he did admit that there hasn't been as much disruption as some people might have feared.

"The activity hasn't been all that impressive yet," he said.

N.Y. Times Op-Ed bashes Obama on drone strikes for assassination

"Who Says You Can Kill Americans, Mr. President?" a scathing New York Times op-ed asked Thursday.

The editorial, written by Vicki Divoll, former general counsel to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and former deputy legal adviser to the C.I.A.?s Counterterrorism Center, heaps criticism on the administration for the practice of using drone strikes for assassination and calls for greater transparency.

Divoll writes:

Mr. Obama should declassify and release, to Congress, the press and the public, documents that set forth the detailed constitutional and statutory analysis he relies on for targeting and killing American citizens. Perhaps Mr. Obama still believes that, in a democracy, the people have a right to know the legal theories upon which the president executes his great powers. Certainly, we can hope so. After all, his interpretation might be wrong.

Divoll notes the known killings of three American citizens who were suspected terrorists: Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical American-born Muslim cleric; Samir Khan, a naturalized American citizen who edited an English-language magazine and was with Awlaki at the time of his death; and Awlaki?s 16-year-old son, Abdulrahman al-Awlaki, who were all killed overseas.

Relationships ? Counselling Connect

Clinicians rarely have couples enter their offices proclaiming an overwhelming fondness, admiration, and unconditional love for one another? ?In Western cultures, more than 90 percent of people marry by age 50.? Healthy marriages are good for couples? mental and physical health.? They are also good for children; growing up in a happy home protects children from mental, physical, educational and social problems.? (APA, Online, 2012)

Why are healthy marriages good? If you are in a healthy marriage, you are experiencing positive feedback, unconditional acceptance, unconditional love, unconditional approval, and the admiration of another.? You are benefiting from the positivity of that relationship.

In unhealthy marriages, you may be experiencing marital strife, conflicts, and continuous disagreements. While unhealthy marriages are not irreparable, they maybe on pathways of irreversible damage.? It is vitally important that if someone has entered an unhealthy stage in their marriage that they seek professional help to resolve their relationship conflicts.

THE BREACH OF SAFETY
When an unhealthy marriage reaches a stage of abuse, neglect or maltreatment; they have reached a stage of cruelty or violence that breaches the couple?s core foundation of safety. ?While the initial foundations of healthy and unhealthy marriages commonly parallel; there is a divergence that occurs within the confines of an unhealthy marriage.

SYMBIOTIC AND PARASITIC RELATIONSHIPS
For relationships that have lasted an extended period of time, one person within that relationship might begin to feel as though their level of intimacy and cohesiveness has been lost.? For a number of relationships, a partner or both may have a belief that their relationship is symbiotic.?? Symbiotic relationships are casted by an idealistic perspective that their every thought, expression, belief system, feelings, and personal desires are mutually the same.?? Whereas, the truth is, that the relationship has evolved into a more parasitic form rather than symbiotic.? Parasitic relationships are based on the need perspective.? If a person is without their partner, their ability to survive and thrive diminishes. Neither the symbiotic or the parasitic relationship are healthy perspectives of a relationship. ?It is always important to remember that no marriage is perfect, but that in an unhealthy marriage dysfunction is the norm.

Indications that you have reached a symbiotic or parasitic relationship:

  • ?You get frustrated or irritated when your partner can?t read your thoughts.
  • You are often disappointed in your partner because he or she doesn?t do things right.
  • You use criticism as a tool to get your partner to be more like you.
  • You are argumentative and dogmatic because there is only one way to think.
  • You use guilt or shame in an attempt to get your partner to do things your way.
  • You say your partner is like you when he or she does something you like.? (Hendrix & Hunt, p. 65, 2004)

CAUSATIONS OF DYSFUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Relationship dysfunction can be caused by many variables.? The most common causation of? dysfunction occurs when there are breaches within the relationship.? For many, a partner stops fulfilling a function or role perviously expected.? If a partner has been sexually driven and becomes perceivably cold; this may ignite high levels of frustration.? For some relationships, financial or familial challenges may be igniter.? For other relationships, it maybe something less subtle or unspoken.? Either way, the relationship has reached an impasse.

SEXUAL FRUSTRATIONS
Sexual frustrations are one of the leading causes of relationship dysfunction.? They have been known to lead some down paths seeking to fulfill their physical and sexual needs.? Others have lead individuals down paths of emotional and physical separation.? For couples, while it is less common to have both mates feeling sexually frustrated; it is more common to have one mate that feels he or she has been sexually restrained within the relationship.

THE KEYS TO ESTABLISHING AND MAINTAINING A HEALTH RELATIONSHIP
As clinicians, we frequently encounter dysfunctional relationships.? Whether a couple has been together for 50 years or 50 minutes; it is not uncommon for a couple to meet at an impasse.? It is at this impasse, that a couple must decide to either continue moving forward on the same path they have come to know or to choose an entirely different route with their lives.

The keys to establishing and maintaining a healthy relationship are humility, forgiveness, respect, unconditional acceptance, unconditional approval, and unconditional love.? For many couples, they follow the same pathway that their own parents have previously traveled.? If one mate goes to bed when angry, he or she may have witnessed his or her mother or father going to bed when angry.? If someone bursts out in tears, he or she may have witnessed a parental figure displaying similar emotions.? Couples often? emulate their parental figures, with seldom deviations from their previously ingrained habits, beliefs, and attitudes.? While it is difficult to change one?s firmly fixed perceptions and attitudes, it is not impossible to gain a new way of thinking, acting, and reacting.

KEY INGREDIENTS TO AVOIDING A DYSFUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIP

  • Never go to bed with anger?. Always forgive or agree to disagree, but never go to bed with anger. Festering anger will become worse and more intense the longer it remains neglected.
  • Always love yourself, because if you do not know how to love yourself, you will not be capable of knowing how to love another.
  • Always love yourself, because if you do not; you will put up with the most egregious nature of another.
  • ?If you don?t think you?re worth loving, you can?t accept the love your partner has to offer you.? (Hendrix & Hunt, p. 118 , 2004)
  • Active listening is essential for creating a mutually respectful relationship.? Relationships are often plagued with inactive listening.
  • It is vitally important to avoid placing blame or shame into your conversations.? Blame and shame prohibits constructive conversations from occurring.
  • ?When your partner lets you know what he or she genuinely thinks and feels, and when your questions about him or her are answered truthfully and without reserve, this inspires openness.? (Block, p. 90, 2003)
  • Try to remind your partner daily of your love, admiration, and desire to be with him or her.
  • For every negative criticism, add a positively constructive remark.
  • Absolute, unconditional forgiveness is key to moving a relationship forward. If we completely forgive, there should remain no lingering conditions or sediments.
  • Avoid ignoring or taking your partner for granted.
  • ?When you are involved in an unsatisfying situation in your life, you cannot ignore it; you must do something.?? (Glasser & Glasser, p.116, 2000) Do not avoid discussing underlying problems, struggles, anger, confusion, stress or frustration in a relationship.? It is of crucial importance that all matters are discussed sooner than later.
  • Do not forget to date your partner.? Always strive to keep the candles in your relationship lit.

Relationships are easier than they appear.? Do not over think your relationship or stress out about being a perfect mate.? On the other hand, relationships are more an art-form than they are job.? We should never see our relationship as complicated, work, or a drudgery.? Rather, we should approach our relationship with the same intense and passionate fervor we had the day we initial engaged our partner.? Be insistent on employing a healthy pursuit of your relationship.

Wisconsin giving rate breaks to big energy users

By GAZETTE STAFF ??Sunday, January 13, 2013 - 9:32 p.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? Big energy users in Wisconsin are getting breaks on rate increases at the expense of other businesses and homeowners.

The move is meant to foster Gov. Scott Walker?s job creation goals, Phil Montgomery, chairman of the Public Service Commission, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for a published Sunday story.

?Is it by design? Yes. We believe it helps in job creation,? said Montgomery, a Republican former state representative from the Green Bay area who is one of two Walker appointees on the three-member panel that regulates utility rates in Wisconsin.

?It?s been a goal of this governor to help every way we can in job growth and creation, and we viewed that, in the setting of the rates, that if we can come up with a fair mix for all that helps job creators, then that?s a good thing,? Montgomery said.

In rate cases finalized last month involving utilities in Milwaukee, Madison and Eau Claire, large manufacturers received smaller percentage increases than homeowners and other businesses, the newspaper reported. For example, We Energies was granted an overall electricity rate increase of 4.2 percent for 2013, but large companies got only a 3 percent boost while homeowners and small businesses got rate increases of at least 5 percent.

Those decisions came on top of discounts already in place for the nearly 900 largest energy users in the state. Those discounts originated from a 2005 law that capped how much they have to pay to support Wisconsin?s Focus on Energy program, which provides energy-efficiency incentives and funds for renewable energy projects. By the end of 2013, those companies will have paid at least $68 million less on their electricity bills since 2010 because a ?temporary? cap that was written into the 2005 law remains.

A manufacturers? group says the discounts and the lower rate increases are justified because Wisconsin has higher electricity rates than surrounding states and because manufacturers are facing a brutally competitive landscape.

If you appreciate what they do, feel free to donate your spare change to help feed them on the weekends. After selecting the amount you want to donate from the menu, you can continue by clicking on PayPal logo.
