Dolphin Browser HD 8.8 (for Android)

As far as Android browser alternatives go, Dolphin Browser (formerly Dolphin Browser HD) was a trailblazer when it launched with a laundry list of features, like gestures and custom User Agents that let you load mobile or desktop versions of websites.?A couple years later, most of Dolphin's competitors have caught up feature-wise, and Google keeps its stock browser the most standards-compatible.

However, thanks to a major performance update, Dolphin 8.8 swims ahead striking a fine balance between performance and speed, and retains our Editors' Choice for Android browsers.

Dress for the Occasion
Dolphin's UI is deceptively simple. Dolphin uses tabbed browsing that lets you open an infinite number of new pages by tapping the "+" sign. But a nifty feature here is that you can quickly scan through all your tabs by swiping across the top. In?Chrome, Firefox, and Maxthon, you have to tap a couple times to run through all your tabs.

Swiping in from the left gives you access to a dozen default (but removable) bookmarks, like quick links to new wallpaper and Wikipedia. Swiping in from the right unveils Add-ons and Themes, should you care to dress your browser for Christmas or Halloween.

The latest version freshens up an already crisp interface. Contextual menus are backlit with fluorescent green. The left sidebar gains a "Quick Access" drawer for key functions (such as Settings), a search button, and single-click bookmarking. The right panel loses Settings, but makes room for a visual tabs button. And every time you open a new tab, Dolphin now uses Speed Dial, Opera's visual bookmarking system, to automatically populate it with your favorite websites.

Add-ons make customizations more meaningful, bringing Evernote, Speed Test, LastPass, Web to PDF, and Amazon Search into your mobile browser. The selection isn't expansive, but there's a lot of utility to be gained. Meanwhile Dolphin Connect lets you sync bookmarks and custom gestures across all your tablets and smartphones. Unfortunately Dolphin isn't available on desktops.?

Gesture- or Voice-enabled Navigation
Dolphin is no longer the only Android browser offering gesture-enabled navigation. Maxthon also has it as a plug-in, while Dolphin's is built-in. I prefer Dolphin's.

With Gestures, you can draw symbols to perform commonly used actions. You tap on the Dolphin icon pinned to the bottom left-hand corner of the screen to reserve the screen for your Gesture. For example, to refresh a webpage, draw a circle. To open a new tab, an N. In addition to eight preloaded gestures, you can even create your own Gesture: I used a B to open bookmarks.

Sonar is Dolphin's voice-enabled navigation feature which you also access by tapping on the Dolphin icon. Yes, every browser takes voice input nowadays and Sonar doesn't perform any faster or more accurately. However in Dolphin, you can shake your device to activate Sonar. Subtle edge.?

Favorite Add-ons
Dolphin has a strong set of thoughtful add-ons to enhance your mobile browsing experience. For instance, I thought Dolphin's new Webzine feature would be superfluous, but it's now the first thing I open after launching Dolphin. Webzine aggregates online publications onto one page in a series of thumbnails. You tap a thumbnail to scroll through the publication's news feed, which displays titles and summaries in boxes.

Dolphin Battery Saver is an easy way to extend your juice by giving you the most energy-conserving settings, like auto-dimming and screen timeouts.

I also added Evernote, a screengrabber (handy on devices running anything below Android 4.0 and can't even take screenshots), WiFi Charger, Web to PDF convertor, the LastPass password manager, and a couple Web games. Most brand-name apps that have add-ons support Dolphin as well.

I really wish Dolphin's add-on page had a search bar so I don't have to scroll through them all. Also, I wasn't able to successfully uninstall add-ons within the browser itself. They just kept reappearing in my process tree. In the end I went through my stock Android setting to uninstall the add-ons.

Lunch at Nam Phuong: Different soup, different rolls | Food and - Blogs

IMG_5707

My quang soup (left) and bo bia rolls

Years ago I used to work as a chef for a wonderful Vietnamese woman at a Southwestern-style cafe. She also had a Vietnamese restaurant, and sometimes we?d go there for treats that weren?t on the regular menu.

Among my favorites were the fresh rolls called bo bia. Like the more familiar goi cuon, they were wrapped in soft rice paper and contained a lot of crispy vegetables. But the principal ingredients were different. Bo bia contain the sweet Chinese sausage called lap cheung, strips of raw jicama and small dried shrimp.

I was jazzed to discover bo bia at the Buford Highway branch of Nam Phuong (here?s my review of the original in Norcross). They did not disappoint. The dull crunch of the jicama, the oils of the sausage and the umami funk of the dried shrimp combine into something quite memorable with each bite.

I also tried the soup called my quang ? a turmeric-yellow chicken broth holding wide rice noodles, chewy pieces of stewing hen, shrimp, Vietnamese-style bologna, quail eggs and black sesame rice crackers. The garnish plate contained cabbage and banana blossom along with herbs, hot peppers and lime. It was a ton of food; I would have preferred more broth and a bit less stuff, which just registered as a pile up of ingredients. It isn?t as good as the my quang down the street.

But that bo bia?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Fresh signs of a national housing rebound and growing support in public opinion polls boosted President Barack Obama's bid for a new term in the White House on Wednesday as Republican rival Mitt Romney struggled to quell his video controversy.

The challenger's attempts to get his campaign back on track ran into new difficulty in the form of criticism from rank-and-file Republicans concerned about their own election prospects in the fall.

"I have a very different view of the world," said appointed Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada, taking issue with Romney's dismissive comments about the 47 percent of all Americans who pay no income taxes. Separately, Senate GOP leaders avoided answering questions about their presidential candidate at a news conference in the Capitol.

After days of virtually nonstop political damage control on issues foreign and domestic, Romney assured an audience at a Miami forum that "my campaign is about the 100 percent in America."

Earlier in the day, at an Atlanta fundraiser, Romney said: "The question of this campaign is not who cares about the poor and the middle class. I do. He (Obama) does. The question is who can help the poor and the middle class. I can. He can't."

The former Massachusetts governor spoke about 48 hours after a video emerged that showed him telling donors last May that as a candidate for the White House, "my job is not to worry about" the millions of Americans who don't earn enough to pay income taxes.

Obama spent the day in the White House, a rarity in a race with less than seven weeks yet to run. He invited democracy advocate Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar to the Oval Office, a chat between two Nobel Peace Prize winners.

Romney raised campaign cash in Georgia in advance of his appearance on a forum hosted by the Spanish-language TV network Univision in battleground Florida, his first before a public audience since the emergence of the videotape. The opening portion of the forum focused on his videotaped comments before moving on to his reluctance to clarify his immigration policy and to his support for Arizona's controversial immigration law.

Fellow Republicans have been pressuring Romney to campaign more extensively. The campaign was planning a more aggressive schedule of traditional campaign events in battleground states, including critical Ohio, as early as this weekend, a campaign adviser said. The adviser spoke on the condition of anonymity because the plans had not yet been announced formally.

In a campaign dominated all year by the sluggish economy, the government said construction of single-family homes jumped to the highest rate in more than two years. Separately, the National Association of Realtors reported that home sales rose last month to the highest level since May 2010.

Real estate has been among the slowest sectors of the economy to recover from the national downturn of 2008. The administration has struggled to reverse a decline in home values that left millions who managed to avoid foreclosure owing more on their mortgages than their homes are worth.

There was downbeat news, as well, in an economy struggling to create jobs. State officials in Michigan reported the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in August rose by four-tenths of a percent to 9.4 percent, well above the national average of 8.1 percent. Romney grew up in Michigan, but he has yet to contest it seriously in his quest for the White House.

A new AP-GfK poll ??" taken before the Romney video was revealed ??" put Obama's overall approval rating among voting-age adults at 56 percent. That was above 50 percent for the first time since May, and at its highest level since the death of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden more than a year ago.

Among likely voters, however, the race was a statistical tie, with Obama at 47 percent and Romney at 46 percent.

The two were also tied statistically when it came to handling the economy and the federal deficit, while the president was preferred on issues of protecting the country, handling health care and understanding the problems of "people like you." On a question of personal credibility, 50 percent of likely voters said Obama more often says what he really believes, while 42 percent said that applied to Romney.

At the same time, 61 percent of likely voters described the economy as poor, and only 22 percent described it as good more than 3 ? years after Obama took office, another indication of the challenges he faces as he bids for a new term in a time of long-term unemployment over 8 percent nationally.

Other new surveys suggested growing support for Obama in the wake of back-to-back national political conventions and Romney's struggle last week to explain an erroneous statement issued at a time of demonstrations ??" one of them deadly ??" at U.S. diplomatic posts in the Middle East.

An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll taken Sept. 12-16 put the president's lead among likely voters at 50-44 percent nationwide.

State surveys by Quinnipiac University, The New York Times and CBS News showed Obama at over 50 percent support among likely voters in Virginia, with 13 electoral votes, and Wisconsin, with 10. Obama carried Wisconsin handily four years ago, but Romney recently signaled he was hoping to make it competitive.

The two men were in a statistical tie in Colorado, which has 9 electoral votes, in surveys conducted between Sept. 11 and 17.

A Washington Post poll also showed Obama with a lead in Virginia.

All the surveys were taken before the flap erupted over Romney's "47 percent" remarks.

Taken together, they showed a highly competitive race as Obama and Romney pursue the 270 electoral votes needed for victory, although with the president in a stronger position than before the two political conventions and with the economy still the dominant issue.

"This is our election to lose," maintained Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. "There's a reason no president has ever been elected with economic numbers like this. If Obama wins, he'll be rewriting political history."

For now, Romney is working to reframe the video controversy into a philosophical difference between himself and Obama ??" to his own advantage.

"Instead of creating a web of dependency, I will pursue policies that grow our economy and lift Americans out of poverty," he wrote in an article in USA Today that omitted any reference to the furor.

At his fundraiser in Atlanta, however, he referred for a second day in a row to a video of Obama, made in 1998. An Illinois state senator at the time, Obama said he believed in income redistribution, "at least to a certain level to make sure everybody's got a shot."

Romney added that the country "does not work by a government saying, become dependent on government, become dependent upon redistribution. That will kill the American entrepreneurship that's lifted our economy over the years."

Responding for the president, White House spokesman Jay Carney said Romney's efforts to push the 14-year-old video were the work of a candidate having "a very bad day or a very bad week."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took up the cause in highly personal terms.

"So who are those Americans Mitt Romney disdains as 'victims' and 'those people?'" the Nevada Democrat said in a speech on the Senate floor. "They're not avoiding their tax bills, using Cayman Island tax shelters or Swiss bank accounts like Mitt Romney."

Romney's campaign released two television ads accusing the Obama administration of conducting a "war on coal." Aides said they were triggered by an announcement on Tuesday by Alpha Natural Resources that it will close mines in Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania and eliminate 1,200 jobs.

No. 20 Notre Dame beats No. 10 Michigan State 20-3

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) ? Everett Golson threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score in the first half to help No. 20 Notre Dame beat No. 10 Michigan State 20-3 Saturday night.

The Fighting Irish (3-0) snapped a six-game losing streak against ranked teams and beat a top-10 opponent for the first time in seven years.

The Spartans (2-1) had won 15 straight at home. The streak included a win over the Irish in 2010 on a fake field goal in overtime that preceded coach Mark Dantonio having a heart attack.

Notre Dame is off to its best start since 2002 when Tyrone Willingham won his first eight games as its coach. The Irish opened 0-2 last year and 1-3 the season before in Kelly's debut before bouncing back to finish with eight wins.

Coach Brian Kelly, though, is not ready to celebrate just yet with No. 17 Michigan (2-1) up next at home.

"There are a lot of things to work on," he said.

Michigan State had its worst showing on offense at home since losing 20-3 to Central Michigan in 1991.

Golson was 14 of 32 for 178 yards and a TD, a 36-yard pass to John Goodman. He ran for a 6-yard TD early in the second quarter to give Notre Dame a 14-0 lead.

"He made some big plays for us early which put us in a good position," Kelly said.

Andrew Maxwell was 23 of 45 for 187 yards and Le'Veon Bell had 77 yards rushing on 19 carries for the Spartans.

The Irish shook off a sloppy start that included George Atkinson running into a teammate on a kickoff return, a false start and a timeout before their first snap.

Golson missed an opportunity to connect with wide-open receiver Chris Brown on what would've been a TD, but the first-year starter made up for it with his arm and legs. On Notre Dame's second drive, Golson eluded a rush as he rolled to the right and threw back across the field on a 36-yard TD pass to Goodman for a 7-0 lead.

Maxwell threw a pass on the ensuing possession into the end zone that Bennie Fowler dropped in what proved to be the Spartans best shot to score more than a field goal.

Maxwell didn't have as much time to pass as he did in wins over Boise State and Central Michigan, and Bell couldn't run all over the Irish as he did in the opener against the Broncos. Maxwell was sacked three times in the second quarter alone ? after not getting sacked in his first two games ? and one of those hits behind the line forced a punt that gave Notre Dame good field position. Golson took advantage, scoring on a 6-yard run on a play that was designed to be a pass to cap a 51-yard drive and give the Irish a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Michigan State responded with a 13-play drive that ended with Dan Conroy making a 50-yard field goal to match his career high and make it 14-3 late in the first half.

The third quarter included four punts for each team in the third quarter in a defense-controlled game that included eight punts for both teams.

The Spartans had a shot to force Notre Dame to punt early in the fourth, but Cierre Wood went left and cut back to the right on a 26-yard gain that seemed to deflate a team and crowd that didn't have much to cheer about all night.

Fans started to fill the aisles when Wood converted a fourth-and-1 from the Michigan State 37 with an 8-yard run to the outside. Kyle Brindza made a 29-yard field goal at the end of a time-consuming drive that took 6:21 off the clock and gave the Irish a 17-3 lead.

Michigan State's slim comeback hopes were dashed when Bell was going out of bounds and his lateral was caught by linebacker Manti Te'o with 4:20 left in the game to set up Brindza's 47-yard field goal that made it 20-3. Te'o had a game-high 12 tackles, one for a loss, and broke up two passes, playing just a few days after the deaths of his girlfriend, who had a long battle with leukemia, and his grandmother.

Notre Dame won its second straight in the series by more than a TD after nine of the previous 11 were closely contested contests.

Michigan State's defense gave up two TDs in the first half after not allowing one in the first two games. The unit improved as the game went on, but couldn't overcome offensive teammates that failed to move the ball consistently against Notre Dame's stingy defense.

The Spartans made their early appearance in the AP top 10 since 1979, but their lackluster showing will lead to them slipping in the rankings.

Notre Dame knocked off a top-10 team for the first time since Charlie Weis won his second game over Michigan in 2005.

Pressure may ease on Hong Kong leader after early poll results

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Political allies of Hong Kong's new Beijing-backed leader performed solidly in city-wide legislative council elections despite recent controversies over contentious China-linked policies, potentially easing pressure on his administration.

Hong Kong voters, many fuelled by anti-China sentiment, thronged to vote for a new legislature on Sunday, a day after Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying backed down from a plan for compulsory patriotic Chinese education in schools, a policy that drew tens of thousands of people to a 10-day protest.

A higher voter turnout -- 53 percent of 3.4 million registered voters cast their ballots, up from 45.2 percent in the last election in 2008 -- was expected to benefit the opposition pro-democracy camp.

But deep divisions across pro-democracy political parties and the lack of a broad, co-ordinated strategy seem to have allowed better mobilized pro-Beijing, pro-establishment parties to hold their ground despite the tide of discontent.

"It is going to get more fragmented (the legislature) because I think the Democratic Party has suffered a setback ... and I think the bargaining power of the whole camp has diminished as a result," said political scientist Ma Ngok at the central vote counting centre on Monday.

"They have not gained any ground despite the seemingly favorable political climate."

While a University of Hong Kong exit poll suggested the democratic camp might clinch several of five so-called new district council "super-seats" that have given these polls a slightly more democratic flavor, the democrats themselves conceded a lackluster showing for the 35 directly elected seats in the 70-seat chamber.

"It's a really difficult situation," said veteran pro-democracy legislator Lee Cheuk-yan. "I think we should re-evaluate our strategy."

Lee said the national education controversy and anti-China sentiment helped get more people out to vote but thought those votes were not being distributed in an effective way.

Hong Kong, which returned to China in 1997 after more than 150 years of British rule, enjoys a high degree of autonomy. But Beijing has resisted public pressure for full democracy and has kept strong influence in politics, the media and education.

Since taking office in July, the Beijing-backed Leung has been fire-fighting a string of China-linked controversies, including dizzyingly high property prices and overcrowding in hospitals that locals blame on new migrants and visitors from mainland China.

Sunday's polls were a test of public support for Leung and his pro-Beijing allies on the one hand and the opposition pro-democracy camp on the other, which is seeking to maintain its one-third majority to give it veto power over policies.

"I think his (Leung's) allies got reasonable results this time round and it will strengthen his confidence in terms of pushing his own policy," said political scientist Ma.

Obama, Romney open the homestretch

SEMINOLE, Fla. (AP) ? President Barack Obama on Saturday pronounced Republicans "dead wrong" for calling America a country in decline, offering a rebuttal to the "naysayers" who drew attention to the nation's staggering debt and anemic job growth. Republican rival Mitt Romney said there's nothing wrong that a new president can't fix.

Both clawed for advantage in a post-convention push through some of the most closely contested states, Obama on a Florida bus tour, Romney rallying in Virginia, opening the homestretch to the election in less than two months.

Obama told a spirited rally that America's "basic bargain" is at stake in the election, the promise that "if you work hard it will pay off." He pledged to make education more affordable, reduce dependence on foreign oil and slash deficits "without sticking it to the middle class" if he gets another term.

He reached for some Ronald Reagan-like optimism in hard times, telling his audience that much about America is essentially right.

"When our opponents say this nation is in decline they are dead wrong," he said. "This is America. We still have the best workers in the world and the best entrepreneurs in the world. We've got the best scientists and the best researchers. We've got the best colleges and the best universities."

He went on: "We are a young nation with the greatest diversity of talent and ingenuity from every corner of the globe so no matter what the naysayers may say for political reasons, no matter how dark they try to make everything look, there's not a country on Earth that wouldn't gladly trade places with the United States of America."

Days earlier, GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan noted that the national debt was reported to have passed $16 trillion on the first day of the Democratic convention. "That's a country in decline," Ryan said. Unemployment remains stubbornly high, clocking in at 8.1 percent on Friday and keeping joblessness and economic weakness on the boil as top campaign issues.

Romney drew cheers in a Navy town when he pledged to strengthen the armed forces and roll back future defense cuts that he blamed on Obama but were negotiated between the president and congressional Republican leaders.

"We must have a military second to none," he told the Virginia Beach rally. "I will maintain our military commitment." He also plans to expand the naval fleet.

Reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, Romney went through it phrase by phrase to suggest Obama has fallen short of its promise in a nation with painfully high unemployment, millions more on food stamps, and one in six people in poverty. "How can a nation so prosperous stand by with such a national tragedy?" he asked. "That is not 'justice for all.'"

His answer: "We're going to have to get a new president."

Obama opened a two-day bus tour in Florida, campaigning in a state with the highest elderly population and an unemployment rate of 8.8 percent, higher than the national average.

As both candidates enter the sprint to the election, Romney is casting Obama as an inept steward of the nation's post-recession recovery. It's a portrayal Obama has been fighting for months as the unemployment rate sticks stubbornly above 8 percent.

On Friday, the government reported that employers added just 96,000 jobs in August and that, aided by frustrated job hunters giving up, the jobless rate dropped only marginally from 8.3 percent the month before.

Obama is countering by presenting himself as a champion of the middle class and by repeatedly decrying Romney's economic remedies as failed throwbacks that would further endanger the economy.

But Obama is also eager to turn the debate away from the economy and on to issues that favor Democrats. Obama repeatedly reminds audiences that Romney's running mate has proposed to overhaul Medicare, the government health program for older Americans, with a voucher-like system that could cost beneficiaries more out of their pocket.

Obama's team says the Medicare argument could help attract undecided voters approaching retirement age, more so than elderly voters whose political views are already set.

Obama's visit to Florida is his first since Romney and the GOP held their convention in Tampa last month. With 29 electoral votes, the state is a lynchpin in both candidates' strategies for winning the election.

Romney and Obama are deadlocked in Virginia, where the Democrat is strong in the northern suburbs of Washington, D.C., and Romney does better in the south and rural areas.

Romney sees working-class white voters, who have at times voted for moderate Democrats such as Sen. Mark Warner, as ripe for picking. Polls suggest those voters prefer Romney over Obama. Romney was visiting a NASCAR race in Richmond later Saturday, a nod to this potentially pivotal voting bloc in Virginia.

Deep spending cuts, including to the armed forces, are to begin automatically next year unless Congress negotiates a debt-reduction package. Obama has opposed the depth of the cuts but has said Republicans need to adopt a plan that includes increases in revenue.

How To Choose A TASER ? Things You Should Consider

It is ideal to have a weapon for self-defense nowadays. This is to ensure safety when you are out in the streets, having your best time at a party or even while you are sleeping in your own home. You do not know when you will need it so it is advisable to keep it handy and accessible.

Taser or stun gun is one of the most recommended self-defense weapons. This is originally launched for police officers' use against fleeing criminals, suspects and other threats to security. Today there are already 42 states in America that legalize the use of stun gun. Therefore, if you are living in any of these 42 states then it is good for you to consider owning this kind of weapon for security purposes.

Here are some considerations in choosing TASER device:

1. Laser Sight - It would be great if the taser device that you will choose has integrated laser sight feature. This will also serve as a psychological advantage for you against the attacker. Once he sees the red light then he knows that he is about to get stunned. With this feature, you might not even feel the need to shoot because the attacker might run away immediately upon seeing the red laser mark on his body.

2. Shape - Some people are used to having a traditional gun-shaped taser but there are also other shapes to consider. There are models of stun guns in pen shape, which is recommended for students, and there are others in smaller and portable shapes.

3. Stun duration - Different models have different stun duration so you might want to check this detail first before buying.

To give you some ideas, here are examples of taser device that you may consider buying:

1. TASER C2 - It is easy to use and easy to carry type of self-defense weapon. It is ideal for women and other people who are not really into guns and shooting since you can easily bring it anywhere and you will find no worries about operating it. This has unique and discrete design - 6 inches long and weighs 7oz. As mentioned, it is easy to operate because of its one button feature. The firing will bring 30-second pulse, which gives you enough time to escape from the attacker.

2. TASER M26C - It is perfect for security guards, bouncers and other people who are good in shooting a firearm. It is indeed designed to look like a firearm. It has 5-second pulse time to stop the attacker. Special features like laser sight, power indicator and safety switch are included in this model.

3. TASER X26C - Another model perfect for more "professional" or advanced firearm users like security guards, bounty hunters or bouncers. In terms of stun duration, you can set to 10, 20 or 30 seconds pulse to take down the attacker. It has safety switch, laser sight, power indicator and LED flashlight features.

For sure, you will be able to choose now the best taser model for you. You should remember to always be responsible with this kind of weapon. This is effective way to protect yourself against an attacker but you must also know how to use it properly.

Plan for suburban Detroit mosque draws resistance

WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. (AP) ? On a prime piece of real estate in suburban Detroit stands a large, vacant elementary school with no vestiges of life ? save for a tiny sign that identifies the building as the "future home" of the Islamic Cultural Association.

But the proposal to establish a new mosque and community center has thrust this quiet site into the center of a battle between a prosperous Muslim community and a Christian legal advocacy group that wants to derail the project as part of its goal to confront the "threat of Islam" in the United States.

The effort is "targeting innocent Americans because of their faith and willingness to engage in the community and to contribute," said the Islamic association's attorney, Shareef Akeel. "They're targeting a people simply because of their faith."

The Islamic association bought the school in upscale West Bloomfield Township last year. Then some residents made a legal bid to have the $1.1 million purchase thrown out over allegations that the deal was somehow corrupt and hidden from the public.

In the process, they gained the support of the Ann Arbor-based Thomas More Law Center. Among other things, the center and residents accuse the school district of negotiating with the association behind closed doors and accepting illegal campaign contributions from an association official.

A judge dismissed the residents' case, saying the plaintiffs had no standing to file a complaint. But they are appealing that decision, and the law center in June called for a grand jury to investigate.

Michigan Attorney Bill Schuette has yet to decide on the request, but the law center says it's confident he will empanel a grand jury because he made corruption a priority of his administration.

Outside court, the center's allegations go beyond the purchase of the building. It accuses Islamic organizations in the United States of taking advantage of the American legal system to wage a "stealth jihad" that aims to transform the U.S. into an Islamic nation. The center also alleges that the Islamic association has ties to terrorism because of its links to other Muslim groups.

The confrontation in West Bloomfield and similar clashes have made Detroit "an active front in a kind of culture war," said Andrew Shryock, a University of Michigan anthropologist, author and expert on the city's Islamic presence.

The Detroit area is home to one of the nation's largest Islamic communities, with 150,000 to 200,000 Muslims living in the city and its suburbs, many of whom emigrated from the Middle East, Europe and elsewhere. The population has sometimes drawn anti-Muslim protesters, such as members of the Westboro Baptist Church and missionaries who demonstrated at Dearborn's 2010 Arab International Festival. The missionaries were arrested for disorderly conduct and later acquitted.

The Islamic Cultural Association ? composed of more than 100 families, including many doctors, lawyers and other professionals ? is "threatening to people who see Muslims as alien," said Shryock, who wrote a book called "Islamophobia/Islamophilia."

To their critics, the social and economic advancement of Muslims in the Detroit area is seen as "somehow anti-American," he said.

The clash is another example of the Thomas More center entering a dispute on behalf of Christian groups that attack Islam. The center has also represented Terry Jones, the minister who in 2011 burned a Quran at his Gainesville, Fla., church ? an act that led to violent protests in Afghanistan that killed more than a dozen people.

Jones sued the Detroit suburb of Dearborn in federal court, alleging that asking him to sign an agreement before a planned protest outside that city's large Islamic Center of America was a violation of his free speech rights.

Richard Thompson, the law center's president and chief counsel, did not return messages left by The Associated Press.

Attorney Erin Mersino, who assisted in the center's investigation, said she could only speak to her role, which included going through documents alleging "a backroom deal" that "was never open to the public" and summarizing the evidence for submission to the Michigan attorney general.

One person who said he is trying not to take sides in the dispute is Jim Manna, who sits on the West Bloomfield Planning Commission, which will consider the mosque proposal in October.

Manna, a Catholic from Iraq who is part of Detroit's large Chaldean community, said he will base his decision solely on whether features of the project, such as a 45-foot minaret, conform to the township's rules and regulations.

So far, Manna said, the proposals for a mosque have "substantially better curb appeal" than "a vacant school, doing nothing but rotting away." But that hasn't stopped him from asking questions about whether the Islamic association has received money from outside groups, whether it would accept money from an Islamic government or what kind of message the imam will preach.

"We have every right to be cautious," he said.

Mozilla pulls Firefox Home from the iOS App Store, posts source code to GitHub

iOS users keen on Mozilla's Firefox Home will have to find another browser syncing solution: the application has been retired. The app worked in conjunction with Firefox Sync, and was designed to give users access to their desktop history, open tabs and bookmarks on the go. Mozilla says the project "provided valuable insight and experience with the platform," but ultimately decided its resources were better focused elsewhere. All isn't lost, however -- the company is making the source available on GitHub, encouraging users to tinker with the iOS Sync client Firefox Home was built on. Feel free to swim in the code yourself at the source link below.

Sugar molecules ? a building block of life ? spotted orbiting star (+video)

Astronomers have spotted molecules of?glycolaldehyde, a simple sugar that is one of the ingredients in the formation of RNA, orbiting a star some 400 light years away.

What a sweet cosmic find! Sugar molecules have been found in the gas surrounding a young sun-like star, suggesting that some of the building blocks of life may actually be present even as alien planets are still forming in the system.

This is the first time sugar been found in space around such a star, and the discovery shows that the building blocks of life are in the right place, at the right time, to be included in planets forming around the star. The astronomers used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to detect the molecules.

The young star, called IRAS 16293-2422, is part of a binary (or two-star) system. It has a similar mass to the sun and is located about 400 light-years away in the constellation of Ophiuchus. The sugar molecules, known as glycolaldehyde, have?previously been detected in interstellar space, but according to the researchers, this is the first time they have been spotted so close to a sun-like star.

In fact, the molecules are about the same distance away from the star as the planet Uranus is from our sun.

"In the disk of gas and dust surrounding this newly formed star, we found glycolaldehyde, which is a simple form of sugar, not much different to the sugar we put in coffee," study lead author Jes J?rgensen, of the Niels Bohr Institute in Denmark, said in a statement. "This molecule is one of the?ingredients in the formation of RNA, which ? like DNA, to which it is related ? is one of the building blocks of life."

Glycolaldehyde can react with a substance called propenal to form ribose, which is a major component of RNA, or ribonucleic acid. RNA is similar to DNA, which is considered one of the primary molecules in the?origin of life.?

Astronomers found the sugar molecules using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) radio telescope in Chile. Using ALMA, the astronomers monitored the sugar molecules and found that they are falling toward one of the stars in the binary system, explained study researcher C?cile Favre, of Aarhus University in Denmark. [7 Theories on the?Origin of Life]

"The sugar molecules are not only in the right place to find their way onto a planet, but they are also going in the right direction," Favre said in a statement.

When new stars are formed, the clouds of dust and gas from which they are born are extremely cold. Much of the gas turns into ice on the dust particles, bonding together and becoming complex molecules, the researchers said.

As the newborn star develops, it heats up the inner parts of the rotating cloud of gas and dust, warming it to about room temperature, the scientists explained. This heating process evaporates the chemically complex molecules and forms gases that emit radiation that can be picked up by sensitive radio telescopes.

"A big question is: how complex can these molecules become before they are incorporated into new planets?" J?rgensen said. "This could tell us something about?how life might arise elsewhere, and ALMA observations are going to be vital to unravel this mystery."

Since IRAS 16293-2422 is located relatively close to Earth, scientists will be able to study the molecular and chemical makeup of the gas and dust around the young star. Powerful instruments, including ALMA, will also help researchers see the interactions of these molecules as new alien planets form.

The detailed results of the study will be published in an upcoming issue of the Astrophysical Journal Letters.
