A Sip for the Ancestors: The True Story of Civilization?s Stumbling Debt to Beer and Fungus

This article is one in a miniseries of five articles that will be posted over the next five days about civilization, fungus, and alcohol. The first four articles are already determined, but just how this series finishes up will be determined by the comments and ideas of readers.

Solomon Katz is an anthropologist. He worked for years to understand humans. It is an endeavor that can inspire a certain distance, a remove from the world. This is the remove necessary to see people in the way an ant biologist might see ants, like tiny specks moving back and forth on the landscape, compelled by unnamed impulses, surrounded by culture. This perspective, along with a fondness for beer, moved Katz to offer his most radical hypothesis, one that reconfigures how we think about the story of civilization. He hypothesized humans domesticated and bred crops such as wheat and barley because they needed more and better grains to brew beer. To Katz, beer is the ?food? most central to the development of modern society. With beer, we began.

The margins of science are dense with shy ideas, variations in a minor key, micro-theories about micro-stories. Katz?s is not one of them. His strikes a low, heavy, chord at the heart of one of the biggest questions we can ask about ourselves:? What happened the day everything changed, the one on which we began to plant and harvest crops? With agriculture came settlements, kings, waterworks, social classes, complex buildings, politics, writing, recorded history and Ipads. All of this came with a startling inevitability. Similar trajectories unfolded independently around the world1. Nothing could be more straightforward than making a hole in which to put a seed. You push your fingers into the Earth. You take the seed, branch or root. You drop it in and cover it and pull the weeds. What has grown is unfathomably complex. It is a modern world held aloft by the leaves, or more literally the descendants of that first farmed plant. The question is why we planted it, and whether it could really have anything to do with beer.

The Beginning of our Troubles

[Image: Wild Wheat, Triticum araraticum, the seeds of which would change the face, and taste, of Western history]

You depend on agriculture. The atoms in your body come from relatively few crops. Essentially none of your atoms are derived from wild plants or animals. If you were born in the U.S., more than half of your body may be composed of atoms derived originally from corn. We tend to see agriculture as an invention for which we have failed to record the inventor, akin to the telephone or the cotton gin. Somewhere far enough back in time there is, in this telling, a Henry Ford of the wheat seed. But maybe it makes more sense to assume agriculture would and could be invented, but to ask, once it was be it is more like a decision, a possibility that was always present but that eventually we chose to embrace. After all, agriculture arose again and again. But why would we choose agriculture? Agriculture led to progress, but also sorrow. Lifespans shortened and a range of health metrics, such as height, bone density and pathology, worsened. ?Class structures developed. The poor and rich came into existence. Why would any society choose the path to a harder life? In the fertile crescent, Katz thinks the answer is beer.

The first beers would have been accidental. A mash of wheat and sprouted barley was left out, in a clay pot, on a clay shelf, in among the mud. Perhaps yeast fell in and fermentation began. Yeast is everywhere. Someone drank the result (we all known someone who would) and, in one way or another, found it worth making more of, using whatever yeast fell down out of the sky, like luck. Beer yeasts are single-celled fungi. They eat simple sugars. As they do, they produce more complex compounds, the nuance or lack thereof connoisseurs favor, and alcohol. The first sample would not have been high in alcohol content. But, if someone drank enough, they would have started to feel the party coming on2.

[Image: Yeast cells of the species Saccharomyces cerevisiae, perhaps the first domesticated organism. Perhaps not]

Beer and bad decisions are no strangers. You have your examples. I have mine. It is said that the city of Raleigh, where I live, was founded when a local landholder, over too many beers, convinced government officials to buy his land to build a city. The land, it would later become clear, was no good for farming, far from rivers and oceans and otherwise a humble place to begin (out of which a lovely city has nonetheless grown). The first bad decision beer led to though might have been agriculture.

By the time agriculture became a possibility, people would have been living in densities greater than any experienced before by a primate. They were densities sufficient to cause social problems-a kind of proto-urban pathological strife. Maybe beer and other intoxicants might have quelled some of these problems. ?Dude, I?m sorry man, I did not mean that about your mom. Have you tasted my fermented wheat? Its all cool.? Maybe it made more. Or maybe, with the onset of social discontent the demand for substances like beer simply increased. Beer though also had other things to offer. Thanks to yeast, beer has more of several key nutrients, such as the B vitamins, than do the seeds out of which it is made. Beer also allowed food to be stored, as beer. And then there is disease? Dense humans favored new diseases. Epidemiologists refer to the emergence of diseases associated with settlement as the first epidemiological transition. Beer might have solved this too. As Katz put it, ?beer drinkers would have had a ?selective advantage? in the form of improved health for themselves and ultimately for their offspring.? But even as beer might have saved us, it asked something in return. It was a deal. To make enough beer to satisfy early demand we had to begin to farm.

Katz is not the first to imagine the domestication of wheat and barley was for beer first and food second, but he has been the most eager and comprehensive in his arguments3. What Katz envisioned was, as he put it in an interview with the New York Times several years ago is that ?the initial discovery of a stable way to produce alcohol provided enormous motivation for continuing to go out and collect these seeds and try to get them to do better.?

[Image: Sumerian beer drinkers (top row).]

That beer has nutritional value absent from wheat and barley is indisputable, as is the observation that beer makes us feel good (at least initially). But, let?s return though to the issue of disease. Katz did not dwell on disease, but disease definitely dwelled in the early settlements where be began. Agriculture followed the first settled human villages. Such gatherings of family and friends are nice, but they are just as often contagious. High densities of people lead to more opportunities for diseases to pass body to body. The greatest challenge in being a parasite, whether a worm, bacteria or virus is getting from one host to another. When hosts are rare and far apart, a parasite has trouble finding them. Imagine having to find a single rare species out in the Amazon or the Serengeti. But now imagine you must do so, as is the case for many parasites, without being able to walk. You depend instead on riding the wind, the water or the hairy body of a mosquito. If you are a parasite that lives by such chance, most of your children will die and so you make many children and favor common hosts, like settled humans.

As humans began to build permanent homes and stopped migrated seasonally, the relatives came to town and everyone, gathered together. Suddenly, the odds a good wind, a river?s flow or a mosquito?s flight, would take you from one human to another increased, dramatically. As those odds increased, not only did many parasites and pathogens evolve the ability to ?use? humans, many switched to using us exclusively.

Nearly all water borne diseases of humans evolved after humans settled and share a basic feature of their life cycle. They enter the water when we poop and reenter humans as they contact that feces directly or drink infected water. Human settlements emerged before good waste disposal systems were developed. The edge of town would have buzzed with flies and pathogenic opportunity. Perhaps it was in this context that the need for agriculture arose, at least in the fertile crescent, at least maybe. It arose as a way of coping with human interactions and human diseases. Beer made you feel good, beer had nutritional value AND beer might kill pathogens and so drinking beer and other fermented beverages would save lives from diseases like typhoid and cholera by preventing them from being passed from one person to the next. Beer was the last wall of defense between life and death.

The first alcoholic beverages would not have had a high alcohol content. High alcohol content drinks depend on a good supply of oxygen and alcohol tolerant yeasts that appear to have evolved only after many generations of beer and eventually wine brewing. The first beer was light on both buzz and taste. You might add some honey or dates. It would then taste better, but not good, not compared with foods that could be gathered, foods like figs, berries and wild meat4. The first beers were not the garden?s delicious fruits but instead its somewhat bitter, but fun, medicine.

[Image 4: The birth of civilization?]

Maybe, because of all of these benefits, albeit some of them very short term, we had to begin to farm, to feed the yeast that made our beer. Katz offered this hypothesis, but then he could not think of a test. Well, of course, he could look at the archaeological evidence, which he did. If he were right, he would have expected to see that the evidence for making beer predates that of, for example, making bread. It seems to. He would also expect to see some settlements that occur before agriculture. There do seem to be some. Then what?

Few papers have been published on Katz?s? idea in recent years. It lay fallow, at once interesting and untended. Science can be beautiful, powerful and elegant. It can also be frustrating. Ideas can wait generations to find their moment. Sometimes good, right, true and elegant ideas never find their time. They sit like seeds, waiting for light that might not come. Katz?s idea seemed as though it might become one of those ideas. Then, just this year a group, led by Todd Schlenke at Emory University, working on, of all things, fruit flies, made a major discovery. Schlenke and his students did not know about the work of Katz, but what they did know was how to test whether animals drink booze to kill their pathogens. They do.

1-There were other trajectories too, a cultural anthropologist might chime in (as the one I am married too happened to), including settlements and societies that arise not because of agriculture but instead because of great places to harvest more or less sustainably, as was the case with coastal peoples in what is now Peru.

2-The Cuniform symbol for Kash, a sort of early beer, was a jug with two men sipping at it from straws, getting their party on.

3-See, for starters, the very fun ?Symposium: Did Man Once Live By Bread Alone,? American Anthropologist 55 (1953), 15-526.? I promise, it really is very fun. It is also worth noting here that the broadest vision for the link between beer and agriculture came in an article Katz coauthored with Mary Voigt, Solomon H. Katz and Mary M. Voigt, ?Bread and Beer: The Early Use of Cereals in the Human Diet,? Expedition 28, 23-34.

4-Beer was first produced crudely, but it got better through experimentation. There have been more than ten thousand years for trial and error taste testing. By 4000 years ago, the Sumerians had more than fifty words for beer and were recording recipes for their favorite beers on clay tablets, one of which, a hymn for the goddess Ninkasa, Katz, along with the Anchor Brewing company, tried to recreate (They said it was good, but didn?t share it widely because they had to drink it quickly, ?for health reasons). The hymn includes the recipe, which is simultaneously an ode, ?You are the one who soaks the malt in the jar, the one who makes waves rise, the one who makes waves fall.? Wine would come later than beer, but still early. Recently, scientists found what appears to be a 5000-year-old wine cask in Iran. See?Solomon H. Katz and Fritz Maytag, ?Brewing an Ancient Beer,? Archaeology (1991), 24-33.

Video is the technology of electronically capturing, recording, processing, storing, transmitting, and reconstructing a sequence of still images representing scenes in motion. Video technology was first developed for cathode ray tube (CRT) television systems, but several new technologies for video display devices have since been invented. Charles Ginsburg led an Ampex research team developing the first practical video tape recorder (VTR). In 1951 the first video tape recorder captured live images from television cameras by converting the camera's electrical impulses and saving the information onto magnetic video tape. This tape was sold for around $50,000 in 1956. Sony began selling videocassette recorder (VCR) tapes to the public in 1971. Later advances in computer technology have allowed computers to capture, store, edit and transmit video clips. After the invention of the DVD in 1997 and Blu-ray Disc in 2006, sales of video tape and tape equipment plummeted. The term video (\

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt to Wed This Summer?

Here we go again.

After a hiatus of at least a few hours, the tabloid rumor mill is alive again with rumors of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's wedding!! Fake spoiler alert: It's SO on this summer!

After seven years and six kids (going on eight, according to OK!, which has thrown in a fake pregnancy for good measure), Brad and Angelina Jolie will finally tie the knot.

"Sources" say the world's most glamorous couple will become husband (her third) and wife (his second) in a small, stylish ceremony at their 16th-century French chateau.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt Wedding EXCLUSIVE!

According to an alleged Brangelina inside source:

"Brad and Angie have kept this quiet, and they're talking about how and when to announce it. They really get a kick out of teasing people with this whole thing."

Funny, that's pretty much true of OK! as well.

Together since 2005, the couple has famously vowed to resist matrimony until same-sex marriage is legal in the whole U.S. But have they softened that stance?

Bogus tabloid covers aside, they have indicated that it may happen ... eventually. "We'd actually like to get married," Pitt revealed in a recent interview.

"We made a declaration that we weren't going to 'til everyone can. But I don't think we'll be able to hold out. It means so much to my kids, and they ask a lot."

Bottom line: It will happen. Just not at any chateau this summer.

Romney raps GOP rivals' government backgrounds (AP)

MESA, Ariz. ? If Mitt Romney is rattled by polls showing presidential rival Rick Santorum nipping at his heels, he didn't show it Monday at an outdoor rally with about 2,500 people.

The former Massachusetts governor stuck to his usual campaign speech, saying his experience running businesses and the 2002 Winter Olympics makes him best qualified to be president. He didn't mention Santorum or former House Speaker Newt Gingrich by name.

And his criticisms of President Barack Obama were familiar. Romney said Obama lacks crucial business experience and doesn't have enough faith in constitutional principles.

Obama "is slowly but surely turning us into a European-style welfare state," he said.

Romney's 25-minute speech in Mesa opened a week that he and his rivals will devote largely to fundraising. Romney plans to campaign Wednesday and Thursday in Michigan, where he was born. Arizona and Michigan hold Republican primaries on Feb. 28.

Polls show Santorum rising after his wins last week in caucuses in Colorado and Minnesota. Romney won Saturday's Maine caucuses.

Romney told the Mesa crowd that Texas Rep. Ron Paul was a doctor before entering Congress. But he said "the other guys have spent their life entirely in government."

He was referring to Gingrich and Santorum, both of whom spent about two decades in Congress.

"Let's not nominate somebody who has not run anything and has not been a leader," Romney said.

The crowd cheered, but Romney seemed rushed at times, and occasionally struggled to be heard above protestors chanting outside the amphitheater on a pleasantly cool evening.

Making Money Online from the Comfort of your Home | ArticleGoes ...

Many people wish to engage in business in order to be their own boss. The only problem is that they lack capital or skill of running a business. They do not realize that they can conduct home business with no prerequisite skills. This is done by making money online which means that they will be working from home.

Many people wish to engage in business in order to be their own boss. The only problem is that they lack capital or skill of running a business. They do not realize that they can conduct home business with no prerequisite skills. This is done by making money online which means that they will be working from home. The modern convenience of the Internet is what that has enabled this exciting home business solution. Making money online involves participating in opinion surveys as a consumer. There are many large product manufacturers that conduct surveys before and after launching their latest products. This creates an opportunity of making money online through paid surveys.

Here is how it works; companies that launch consumer products compensate consumers for their time taken to fill the surveys. The compensation may be in form of checks, gift vouchers or gift packs all of which have their value in cash. That is where a chance for starting home business arises. But this would require participating in the surveys at least daily.

The opinion surveys and rewarding is done by email notification. So essentially the consumer can make money online while working from home or anywhere he prefers. As long as there is an Internet connection, you can start the home business with only basic computer and Internet skills.

There are online survey websites that compile lists of companies conducting online surveys. Some of these websites have contracts with the product manufacturers to conduct opinion surveys. In this business, the websites are able to supply a good opinion poll from their pool of consumers working from home.

Consumer product manufacturers have to always check their demographic by opinion polls. It is what enables them to stay in business. That is why they are willing to pay an extra buck just to get an honest opinion. For the consumer, participating in at least one survey each day generates a satisfying income. So much so, it justifies working from home.

Making money online has so many advantages that it challenges regular jobs. Firstly, since you are working from home you do not incur daily expenses to commute. You also do not incur other out of town expenses like expensive meals. You avoid the stress that comes with a nine to five job or city business. You definitely are not required to maintain a certain dress code or give periodic reports.

Taking into account net earnings after deducting expenses, it dawns on a consumer that surveys provide a great home business case. That is so long as the consumer meets his daily quota of opinion surveys. This quota is self allocated depending on one?s desired income. There is no boss and this is a business like any other. Home business is not for those trying to be overnight millionaires. Rather it is for honest, hard working individuals looking to earning money online with no fuss. Making money online can also be for those who already have jobs but have extra time. They can make extra income by taking online surveys as a side business.

Perfect Health Diet ? Pork: Did Leviticus 11:7 Have It Right?

If we were to rank popular meats by their healthfulness, the order would be (1) fish and shellfish, (2) ruminants (beef, lamb, goat), and (3) birds (duck, chicken, turkey). In last place would be pork.

Given the iconic place of bacon in the Paleo movement, it?s worth exploring the evidence against pork.? George Henderson has given us a great place to start:? ?Nanji and Bridges identified possible problems with pork plus moderate alcohol in 1985 and other researchers have confirmed the pattern since.?

Pork Consumption and Liver Cirrhosis

Pork consumption has a strong epidemiological association with cirrhosis of the liver. Startlingly, pork may be even more strongly associated with alcoholic cirrhosis than alcohol itself!

The evidence was summarized by Francis Bridges in a recent (2009) paper [1], building on earlier work by Nanji and French [2]. A relation between pork consumption and cirrhosis of the liver is apparent across countries and has been consistently maintained for at least 40 years.

Here is the correlation between pork consumption and mortality from liver cirrhosis in 2003 [1]:

The correlation coefficient of 0.83 is extremely high ? rarely seen in epidemiology. Correlation coefficients range from -1.0 to 1.0, and a coefficient of 1.0 would indicate that cirrhosis mortality was strictly proportional to pork consumption. The very low p-value confirms the statistical association.

Here is the relation between alcohol consumption and mortality from liver cirrhosis:

The correlation coefficient is lower than for pork consumption.

In epidemiological studies, beef, lamb, and pork are often grouped together as ?red meat.? However, this may conceal differences between pork and the ruminant meats. Bridges found that beef actually appeared protective against cirrhosis:

In the present study using 2003 data, a significant negative association between dietary beef and rates of cirrhosis mortality was found?. [D]ietary beef may be a protective factor regarding the pathogenesis of alcoholic cirrhosis. [1]

This would be consistent with considerable evidence, discussed in our book (pp 57-58), showing that saturated fat is protective against liver disease, while polyunsaturated fat causes it. Epidemiological data confirms that saturated fat is protective; here is Bridges again [1]:

[A]nalysis of data from 17 countries indicated that diets high in cholesterol and saturated fat protected (i.e., inversely correlated) against alcoholic cirrhosis while polyunsaturated fats promoted (positively correlated) cirrhosis [8].

Beef is high in saturated fat, low in polyunsaturated fat. Pork is relatively high in polyunsaturated fat.

If the fat composition is playing a role, perhaps it is not that surprising that pork is more strongly related to cirrhosis than alcohol.

Either fructose or alcohol can react with polyunsaturated fat to produce liver disease. Sugar consumption, for example in soft drinks, may be just as likely to combine with pork to cause a cirrhotic liver as alcohol. But no other common dietary component can substitute for the role of polyunsaturated fat in causing liver disease.

Here Nanji and French summarize the correlation of pork with liver disease even in the absence of alcohol:

In countries with low alcohol consumption, no correlation was obtained between alcohol consumption and cirrhosis. However, a significant correlation was obtained between cirrhosis and pork. A similar relationship was seen in the ten Canadian provinces, where there was no correlation between cirrhosis mortality and alcohol consumption, but a significant correlation was obtained with pork. [2]

But fat composition is hardly likely to be the sole issue with pork. Most polyunsaturated fats in modern diets are derived from vegetable oils, not pork. It seems that there must be something else in pork besides polyunsaturated fat that is causing liver disease.

Pork and Liver Cancer

We would expect that if pork can cause liver cirrhosis it will also promote liver cancer, since injured and inflamed tissues are more likely to become cancerous.

Indeed, there is an association between pork consumption and the primary liver cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma. Nanji and French [3] write:

The authors investigated the possibility that dietary fat, meat, beef, and pork consumption might be factors that would, in addition to alcohol, correlate with mortality from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in different countries?.

The correlation between HCC and alcohol was 0.40 (p < 0.05); that with pork consumption was also 0.40 (p < 0.05). There was no correlation with total fat meat, beef, and cigarette and tobacco consumption.

Here is the raw data by country:

Another way of looking at the data is based on countries with low and high incidence of HCC. Countries with high incidence of HCC eat more pork and drink more alcohol, but actually eat less animal fat:

Pork and Multiple Sclerosis

Nanji and Norad [4] looked for other diseases that correlate with pork consumption, and hit upon multiple sclerosis. The connection is remarkable:

A significant correlation was obtained between prevalence of multiple sclerosis and ? pork consumption (r = 0.87, p less than 0.001). There was no significant correlation with beef consumption. [4]

As noted earlier, a correlation coefficient of 0.87 is extremely high, and a p-value below 0.001 also shows a very strong relationship. MS is much more likely to befall pork eaters. Such a strong correlation makes it look like pork, or something found in pork, is the cause of MS.

Nanji and Norad further note that beef, the ?other red meat,? is not associated with MS:

The correlation between pork consumption and MS prevalence was highly significant. Also, of major significance was the absence of a significant correlation between MS prevalence and beef consumption. This is consistent with the observations that MS is rare in countries where pork is forbidden by religious customs (e.g. Middle East) and has a low prevalence in countries where beef consumption far exceeds pork consumption (e.g. Brazil, Australia). [4]

The correlation between pork and MS may be seen here:

Lauer [5] verified the pork-MS link, but found it to be characteristic of processed pork:

When ? quantitative data are taken into account, and a combined factor ?smoked meat? or ?smoked pork? is formed, the association is very high throughout. This factor is also compatible with the high risk of multiple sclerosis in Scotland and particularly in the Orkney and Shetland Islands and with the only transitorily high incidence in the Faroe Islands [6], whereas coffee can hardly explain both epidemiological features.

Arguments for the biological plausibility of some agents occurring in smoked and cured meat (in particular nitrophenol haptens and their protein conjugates) have been put forward [7]. There appears at present to be no plausibility for the factor ?margarine?, which was also not compatible with the temporal pattern of multiple sclerosis in the Faroe Islands. [6]

Conclusion

There are remarkably strong correlations between pork consumption and liver disease, liver cancer, and multiple sclerosis.

What can be behind those relationships? The relatively high omega-6 fat content of pork may be a contributing factor, but it can?t be the whole story. It seems there is something else in pork that makes pork consumption risky.

What is it about pork that is so dangerous, and what does it mean for our dietary advice? That will be the topic of my next post.

Consider Body Sculpting Long Island | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

With body sculpting Long Island, the community is provided with a variety of cosmetic procedures designed to improve the appearance of your physical shape. Contours are enhanced through invasive as well as non-invasive techniques which have not produced successful results with exercise and diet. This means that stubborn fatty deposits which have not responded to intense workouts and dietary changes may be removed through cosmetic options.

A large percentage of individuals who are attempting to live a healthier lifestyle and experienced significant weight loss may struggle to reduce the fatty tissues, also termed fat pockets. These fat pockets may be a result of genetic factors among others which makes losing the weight in specific areas virtually impossible. The most effective means to remove the excess tissue is through liposuction procedures in which the desired changes may be achieved through cosmetic surgery.

There are invasive as well as non-invasive procedures for improving the appearance of bodily areas and in the ability to tighten skin. Tightening and contouring are often applied to the regions such as the buttocks, arms, thighs, neck and stomach. One may consider the option of the insertion of implants in which skin is tightened and toned.

A popular invasive procedure is that of liposuction where the fatty tissue is removed through the insertion of a needle and attached vacuum function. Liposhifting is another option whereby one may require fat to be removed from one area and inserted into another. Always consult with a certified surgeon in determining which options are most suitable.

Wrapping has received considerable attention where the skin is tightly wrapped in a mixture of herbs for the facilitation of smoother skin. To remove fatty deposits laser therapy has been practiced. Many have applied lotions for improving skin tone and reducing fatty tissue, but seldom does this option produce desired results.

Contouring is offered through body sculpting Long Island. Individuals may access a range of resources designed to address various needs pertaining to improvement of shape. Always remain informed of the procedures you are interested in. body scuplting long island

Deeper Iran sanctions; US targets its central bank (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Targeting Iran's economy, the U.S. ordered tough new penalties Monday to further pinch the country's financial system and encourage Israel to give sanctions more time before any military action against Iran's nuclear program.

The new, stricter sanctions, authorized in legislation that President Barack Obama signed in December, will be enforced under an order he signed only now. They give U.S. banks new powers to freeze assets linked to the Iranian government and close loopholes that officials say Iran has used to move money despite earlier restrictions imposed by the U.S. and Europe.

The action against the Central Bank of Iran is more significant for its timing than its immediate effect. It comes as the United States and its allies are arguing that tough sanctions can still persuade Iran to back off what the West contends is a drive to build a nuclear bomb.

The U.S. and Europe want to deprive Iran of the oil income it needs to run its government and pay for the nuclear program. But many experts believe Iran will be able to find other buyers outside Europe.

The European Union announced last month it would ban the import of Iranian crude oil starting in July. The U.S. doesn't buy Iranian oil, but last month it placed sanctions on Iran's banks to make it harder for the nation to sell crude. The U.S., however, has delayed implementing those sanctions for at least six months because it is worried about sending oil prices higher at a time when the world economy is struggling. Iran exports about 3 percent of the world's oil

The faster and more painfully sanctions can be seen to work, the better the case to shelve any plan by Israel to bomb Iran, a pre-emptory move that could ignite a new Mideast war. Taking this initial step against the Central Bank, the first time the U.S. has directly gone after that major institution, is one way the Obama administration can show momentum now.

Israel, meanwhile, has been increasingly open about its worry that Iran could be on the brink of a bomb by this summer and that this spring offers the last window to destroy bomb-related facilities. Many Israeli officials believe that sanctions only give time for Iran to move its nuclear program underground, out of reach of Israeli military strikes.

White House spokesman Jay Carney denied that Monday's unexpected announcement of new banking sanctions was a sign of heightened worry about an Israeli attack.

"There has been a steady increase in our sanctions activity and this is part of that escalation," he said.

Carney said U.S. sanctions on Iran are already squeezing Iran's economy and have exacerbated tensions within the Iranian leadership.

"There is no question that the impact of the isolation on Iran and the economic sanctions on Iran have caused added turmoil within Iran," he said.

Iran is the world's third-largest exporter of crude oil, giving its leaders financial resources and leverage to withstand outside pressure. Last year, Iran generated $100 billion in revenue from oil, up from $20 billion a decade ago, according to IHS CERA, an energy consulting firm.

If Iranian oil is prevented from getting to market, other suppliers could make up the difference. The U.S. has been pressuring other Middle East and African nations to step up production for sale to Europe. Saudi Arabia has said it could increase production to make up for any lost Iranian crude.

Iran's disputed nuclear program became a global concern more than five years ago, when the extent of the country's research and uranium enrichment began to be known. Since then a web of international economic and other sanctions have failed to stop Iran's progress toward a point when it could build one or more nuclear devices.

U.S. intelligence agencies say Iran is indeed close to that ability but has not yet decided to go ahead. Iran says its nuclear program is peaceful and denounces sanctions as aggression.

The new U.S. penalties were unexpected now. The sanctions were included as an amendment in the wide-ranging defense bill the president signed in late December, though when and how they were to be levied on Iran was unclear.

The White House had previously said it would take months to evaluate the likely effect on the fragile global economy before taking the next large steps, including new penalties on the Central Bank.

Now, U.S. institutions are required to seize Iranian state assets they come across, rather than rejecting the transaction involved.

The value of Iranian assets affected by the new order was not clear. Iran does almost no direct business with the United States after three decades of enmity, but its money moves through the world financial system and its oil is sold in dollars.

In a letter to Congress, Obama said more sanctions were warranted, "particularly in light of the deceptive practices of the Central Bank of Iran and other Iranian banks."

He cited the hiding of transactions of people or institutions and other loopholes.

In an interview Sunday with NBC, Obama said the U.S. has "a very good estimate" of when Iran could complete a nuclear weapon, and he spoke favorably of the effect of sanctions and diplomacy to resolve the impasse.

Obama addressed the concern about Israel but suggested there is still time.

"I don't think Israel has made a decision on what they need to do," Obama said.

He did not answer a question about whether Israel has promised to notify the United States before any pre-emptory strike.

Republican presidential candidates have accused Obama of being too timid in his dealings with Iran, and while U.S. officials reject that characterization they acknowledge they are stepping cautiously because of fear of upsetting the global economy.

Verizon-Redbox deal adds to online video choices - seattlepi.com

A new Internet streaming venture built around Redbox's DVD-rental kiosks adds to a crowded field of online video-viewing services dominated by Netflix.

In announcing the new venture Monday, Verizon Communications Inc. and Redbox's parent company, Coinstar Inc., did not say what types of content will be available or how much the service will cost when it starts in the second half of this year.

But executives did say the service will bundle streaming and DVDs, which Redbox currently rents through its ubiquitous red kiosks in supermarkets, drug stores and other places around the U.S.

It's likely that any plan from the new, still-unnamed venture will be cheaper than the minimum $16 a month that Netflix customers now pay to get both DVDs and online streaming access to a vast trove of movies, TV show episodes and original programming. It's also likely that the new venture won't have as extensive a selection as Netflix now does.

Companies such as Apple Inc. and Amazon.com Inc., as well as cable companies and TV stations themselves, already offer a variety of ways to catch TV show episodes and movies using Internet-connected devices.

Here are details on some of them:

? Amazon's Instant Video

Amazon's service offers thousands of movies and TV show episodes for online rental. Rental prices are generally $1 to $5. There is no monthly subscription plan, so this option is best if you're looking for an a la carte plan that lets you pick what you want to watch.

Amazon offers free streaming of some of its content to members of its $79-per-year Prime program, which also offers free two-day shipping and discounts on next-day shipping.

With Amazon, you can stream movies and shows on computers or on TV sets using a compatible, Internet-connected device such as a Blu-ray player or a set-top box from the likes of Sony, Panasonic, TiVo or Logitech.

? Apple iTunes

Renting movies through Apple's iTunes is another pay-per-view option to access the latest movies or TV shows. You can rent regular or high-definition flicks and watch them on an iPhone, iPad, computer or TV set using an Apple TV set-top box.

Apple lets you rent first-run, high-definition movies the day they come out on DVD for $5 each, though most movies cost $3 or $4. TV shows are generally $1. You can watch rentals for a day or two from when you start playing them.

As with Amazon, renting movies through Apple is a good option if you want the latest releases as soon as possible.

? Blockbuster

The on-demand service from this movie rental pioneer lets customers rent or buy movies and TV shows and watch them through their TV, Blu-ray player, digital video recorder, mobile phone or other gadget. There are no monthly fees.

Renting ranges from fee for a small amount of content to "$2.99 or less" and "$3 or higher" depending on the movie or show.

Separately, Blockbuster also offers access to its (at)Home service for customers who sign up for satellite-TV services from Dish Network Corp., its parent company. The (at)Home service includes streaming movies as well as DVDs by mail. It is included for three months for new Dish customers who sign up for the service. After that, it's as low as $10 a month.

? Cable

Cable TV providers such as Comcast Corp. and Time Warner Cable Inc. offer on-demand options to their monthly subscribers. Time Warner charges $3 or less for older movies, more for new releases. Other cable TV companies have similar pricing. Movies are sometimes free, including those that come with a subscription to HBO or other premium channels.

Of course, you need monthly cable service, which generally runs about $70 per month.

? Hulu and Hulu Plus

The service owned by the parent companies of broadcasting networks ABC, NBC and Fox offers thousands of TV show episodes and movies to its viewers.

Besides a free option, Hulu Plus subscribers can pay $8 per month for more content, high-definition viewing and access on the iPad and newer-model iPhones, as well as video game consoles and high-end TV sets from Samsung, Sony or others.

Hulu's content skews more toward TV shows than movies, though both are available. It's a good option for those looking to watch shows such as the "Daily Show," ''Family Guy" or "The Office."

Both Hulu and Hulu Plus show advertisements, though on Hulu Plus there are movies available without commercial interruption. Hulu is also delaying the availability of some TV episodes on its free service.

? Vudu, from Wal-Mart

Walmart.com offers streaming movies and TV shows through the website Vudu.com, generally for $2 to $6. Many movies are available for streaming a la carte, the same day they come out on DVD. There are no monthly subscription plans.

Sin Stocks Trailing Their More Virtuous Peers in 2012 | The ...

With the first week of February behind us, one trend has been unmistakable in early 2012: cyclical and more speculative sectors are outperforming defensive ones (see Figure 1).? At 13 percent YTD returns apiece, materials and financials have nearly doubled the 6.9 percent return of the S&P 500.? More staid utilities, telecom and consumer staples are actually in negative territory.

Figure 1

Though I consider ?sin stocks? to be a stock sector in of themselves, tobacco and alcohol generally fall under the umbrella of defensive consumer staples.? And as such, the sin stock recommendations of the Sizemore Investment Letter have underperformed the market year to date (see Figure 2).

Figure 2

After massively outperforming the market in 2011, Sizemore Investment Letter recommendations Altria (NYSE:$MO), Philip Morris International (NYSE:$PM), and Diageo (NYSE:$DEO) have all underperformed the S&P 500 year to date.

I continue to recommend the three, and I expect all to generate market-beating returns over time.? Sin stocks such as these throw off buckets of cash flow and pay great dividends.? They are exactly the kinds of stocks you want to own during a protracted sideways market; at a time when capital gains are unreliable, getting paid in cold, hard cash may be the only return you get at all. And while there is no such thing as a truly ?recession proof? stock, tobacco and alcohol are about as recession resistant as they come.

Bottom line: it makes sense to have sin stocks as a core piece of your long-term portfolio.? (For a longer explanation on the virtues of investing in vice, see ?The Price of Sin.?)

Investing for the long-term is great, but many readers are no doubt asking ?what about now??

Whether sin stocks enjoy a good 2012 or not will largely depend on what happens in Europe.? If the crisis conditions continue to ease, more speculative sectors should continue to outperform for at least the first two quarters of the year.? This is the scenario that the Sizemore Investment Letter considers most likely, and we?ve chosen German, Spanish, and Emerging Market stocks as our preferred way to profit from this return of risk appetites.

But as investors, we must always hope for the best but prepare for the worst.? If Europe slips back into crisis, I expect 2012 to follow the same basic path as 2011: on again / off again volatility in a market that hangs on every conflicting word coming out of the mouths of European policymakers.? In this scenario, sin stocks would be an attractive safe haven, as they were in 2011.

In the Sizemore Investment Letter, we?re increasing our risk exposure by allocating to riskier sectors.? But we?re also hedging our bets by maintaining long-term positions in our core sin stocks.? Tobacco and booze served us well during a very turbulent period in the stock market, providing calm and stability when it was needed most.? We would expect much the same were the volatility to return.

And if the stocks themselves aren?t sufficient to help us relax?well?we might just have to rely on the products.? Scotch, anyone?
